What did I do wrong.. Edge Cracks..

Alright guys, what did I do wrong? These are 10/11 Surface No Time's that I just barely got mounted last week and I skied on for 3 days. I'm trying to figure out how on earth this happened. I've owned like 5 pairs of park skis total and I ski the same on all of them, and I've never had this happen, even my old Surface Watch lifes. I have like more than 10 edge cracks underfoot. I ski at Park City. I de-tuned them like I always de-tune my skis, and none of my other skis have ever even cracked ever. How bad is this really? What can I do?

Yeah you cant do much and surface is a bitch and wont warranty them if there is any sign of rail use... even if theyre park skis.

No company out there will warranty something that was caused by rails. It sucks, but if a company was to do so, all rail damage would thus be covered, and you could trade in skis every year for new ones after a season of park abuse.

take it to your local shop and as long as its not on the tips then they should be able to work magic. a similar thing happened to me but it was in my nose and they said that i was screwed. but if its on the sides they should be able to take it out and replace it with new edge. good luck bro

they can replace edges. but once the original edge is out. it will fall apart within a couple days on rails

The steel they use is probably too hard/brittle.  I had Elan Puzzles 2 years in a row and had them crack within a week or two.  I have about 60 days on the 10/11's and haven't had a crack yet.  We had plake a a demo day and he said they figured it out and stopped using super hard race edges.

A good shop can replace the edge, dont expect it to last too long tho. The edges you have now will rip out eventually. Prolly sooner than later.

do not have a shop replace the edges...thats retarded. just leave them how they are. my volkls were cracked like that after the first few times on them, and i skied them for a year after that and it never got any worse. i've gotten more edge cracks (around 15 or 20 now), but they haven't fallen out or gotten any worse. trying to rip out the old edge and replace it sounds like a terrible idea

for some reason i thought ninthward warrentied against rail damage.
but they are shitty skis so why would you buy them in the first place?

I would try and get them warrentied, they probably won't but its still worth a try. This is really too bad, Surface supposedly had fixed their durability issues this year.

see, heres my issue. Skis edges that are advertised for park should NEVER be breaking in a matter of a week. a month or a season is a completely different story, but a week? seriously, that should never happen and should definitely be warrantied. thats crazy horse shit

So how long do we think these can last at this rate? I'm like really really not planning on buying another pair of skis this year. How quick are those little sections of edge gonna pull out? I'm worried I'm gonna keep riding them and the edges are just gonna shatter into tiny pieces.

I got a full refund on my suspects a few years ago after half a season of riding, after two shops told me i was wasting my time and money trying to get them warrantied when it was obviously rail damage.

OP, i, nor anyone i know has ever dealt with surface, but i feel someone there would understand your situation. Explain how you have owned surfaces in the past and, besides this, have otherwise loved their product, and were excited to continue supporting them in the future. And be polite.

If you want them to last longer, avoid rails. If you dont wanna do that, flip the skis so you have the left ski on your right foot. Edge cracks usually happen in the place where you land on the rail, switching the skis might get you a few more days before more edge cracks appear.

If the cracking gets really bad, maybe some epoxy to keep water from getting into the ski. If it pulls out, epoxy over the gap after cleaning the area, or if you wanna spend the cash, take it into a shop and see what they can do. It is not cheap, most charge by the inch.

And from the standpoint of a consumer, yeah, its a rough deal to have this happen. I hope he does get a warranty, but from the standpoint of a company, you have to have a firm policy, and you have to be able to understand that. Otherwise, wheres the line? What constitutes a grace period? 30 days, but not 31? What kinda days anyways, days skied? Days past purchase date? Number of rails you've hit?

Really, the only solution is to either find a way to make skis so cheap that companies can afford to replace them willy-nilly (I hear theres a wakeboard company that warranties any sorta damage because their manufacturing costs are so low, you just have to send a video of you destroying your old board), or for someone to set up some sorta ski insurance plan... both of which dont sound too appetizing...

Dub iPhone fail. Surface told me they won't do anything. Pretty bummed. Surface has been my favorite for a long while, but I can't justify this. I explained my whole situation and got no sympathy at all, apparently it's all my fault that it took only 3 days to destroy the edges. He said they haven't been having this problem with anyone else, so if that's true, how is it not obvious that mine are defective..

Your not alone man, my K2 Domains cracked in 2 places last week got the edge repaired, the new section pulled out the 1st time i used them (£30 well spent), all mine is good for is the bin, you should keep using yours till they are a right off.

i would sell them and try to get a pair or watch lifes. i havent heard of many people having problems with those.... yet.
all other surface skis have decent durability, but as everyone knows the nine life/no time durability has been hit or miss in the past. sadly, mostly miss.

there are a few wakeboard companies that have a limited lifetime warranty that is only void when rails/sliders/jibs start to be hit. and for the video part, some companies will let you keep your board and send you a new one if you can prove the damage was not proven by a non water surface, and you can provide photo/video evidence that it can no longer be used as a wakeboard.

this kind of policy works quite well in my opinion, but would not work at all for skiing. in most cases, the amount of time you use a wakeboard in a regular summer season isnt anywhere near as much as you use a pair of skis in a regular winter season.

that being said, in my opinion there should be some sort of policy/grace period for rail damage on skis, something short, but long enough to keep the customer happy. i understand that it does cost companies a fair bit to have policies like that, but companies need to stand behind their products and their durability/lack of, and in the long run it will end up costing companies more when they do not stand behind their products when they break and people stop buying them because they arent willing to take a $500 (or however much) risk.

i dont mean to put the quality of anyones product into question, or tell anyone theyre doing anything wrong, this is just my take on the matter.

i have to pairs of surface skis and i love em to death, but i also never take em on rails, but this is pretty weak on surfaces part. obviously something is up with those skis and you should be hooked up.

sadly i wont purchase anymore skis from surface unless they change how they handle these types of situations. ON3P here i come

take note surface. keep this shit up and you will lose your entire loyal market to your competitors

welcome to the world of rails... every single pair of skis I have used on rails has gotten edge cracks within the first cople times shredding rails.  this includes a pair of rossis, a pair of moments, 2 pairs of dynastars, and 3 pairs of k2s.  I have never dreamed of asking for replacements. 

When you thin metal strips on heavy duty metal rails, guess what?  YOUR EDGES WILL CRACK.  I have lost 7 pairs of skis to this rail addiction and will lose many more.

I have never even considered asking for a new pair.

Guys, I have to be honest, if that was a Blue Steele in the picture, I dont know if we'd warranty it either. I'd like to believe that edge cracks wouldnt happen in our skis that fast (we use a thicker edge than most other companies, minus the teeth, its 2.5 x 2.5 mm), and all the skis we've had our pro riders use have held up pretty well to this kind of damage... but I dont know, if you have ten really bad impacts on one day, its possible that you could do that to a brand new ski, and its just not something that any company covers.

I agree its bullshit, but as I said before, you have to understand that it sets a precedent for returns on rock damage and skiing into the parking lot.

read what i wrote. they dont take care of their customers. that shits weak. anyone who disagrees with me is both dumb and blind. yea, im happy with my product, but they are dicking a fellow skier pretty hard(again). i dont want to be associated with that type of business mentality. obviously something is up with those skis, everyone who has ever hit a rail knows that. they should fix the situation and they wont. thats bad business so i dont want to give them my money anymore.

i did decide that for myself hombre, i dont like how they handle themselves with obviously faulty products.

what about WME? when they had their beef with level1 every NSer was enraged, inculding probably yourself. but what did WME ever do to you? did they sue you? no, so why did we all get pissed?

Their warranty in slc is actually amazing. If you go to causwell in SLC and say you ride with Andy and Colby, they'll give you like 50% discount. The same discount that axis gets for their kids.

If you contact them and tell them your story I think they'll replace em'. But first option is best if you can't get a warranty on them.

I had one lifes from like 3 years ago. I contacted them because my binding ripped out of my holes. Within a week they sent me this year's model. So I quite don't understand the hate towards their customer service.
