Hitting your head, and becoming dumber

Since the 9th grade(when I started actually doing things) I've hit my head a bunch of time. In grade 9, I could think of things so easily. I could recall something I saw a week prior without any effort. Now, 4 years later I sincerely have difficulty remembering things. I can't remember stuff after I read it now, and it takes me forever to remember things I know.



Anyone else get this? Or am I going through alzheimers.

It could be a bit of brain damage from concussions which do sometimes cause a bit of memory loss.

I've never had a concussion though. I hit my head really hard sometimes and I feel dizzy and woozy for a bit, but for the most part I'll be fine. The only time I really got hit SUPER hard I had blood come out of my ears, but I went to the hospital for that. They said I was fine and sent me home.


Is there something else that could be causing my memory to slip?

Oh trust me, they were concussions, I pretty much go to the doctor about 3 or 4 times each ski season (3-4 months) for concussions. And yes I do get that.


How much sleep do you get nightly? how late do you stay up?

During football, also on the snow when I wipe I'll hit my head. I've broken like 3 helmets in the past 4 years. Also when I'm riding my bike and stuff. Took a digger on a pocket bike once too.

Football could be the problem. Those helmets cause a lot of head problems.

i, too, have smashed my head into less than forgiving surfaces. the only cool time was when i tried a standing backflip and head slapped the ground really hard. and there was the time i passed out and clocked myself against the side of a bathtub. but i've always been a bit of a flake, haven't noticed a significant increase in it over time.

I read something in Sports Illustrated about repeated low intensity hits to your head in a football helmet can cause memory loss. I just didn't think playing for 4 years would do that.

i think hitting your head can really make things like memory loss and stuff happen. my little sister took a few falls when she was real young like toddler and stuff and she doesnt read at her grade level and is a litle slower... shes gone to all sorts of doctors and unfortunately i dont know all about it but if you think its serious enough to seek medical attention to run some tests let me know and ill talk to my parents about some stuff

you should probably just chill and take it easy on the intense sports until your brain has time to heal completely. It's probably not a good thing that you keep re-injuring yourself before you are fully recovered.

No idea. I'm just guessing that if you are seeing memory loss as a result of hitting your head all the time, that you should stop putting yourself in a position for that to happen again until you figure out exactly what is wrong.

theres a really good article in the new sports illustrated about how even minor head impact if it happens enough can cause perment brain damage specificaly effecting short term memory and visual memory. your fucked

I feel like I have the same i've had 9 concussions in the last 4 years, but I just got a brain scan and I have no structural brain damage.

Just make sure you have enough time between concussions, don't use the computer too much if it's giving you a headache and give your brain "rest time" it sounds stupid but it helps, something like stretching iwth music and the tv turned off.

Last year I coasted through algebra II with an A all year, not trying at all or even applying myself.

I smoked a fair bit of green over the summer (haven't for like a month and a half now), and now I'm busting my ass and really having a bad time in pre calculus. I currently have a D. I've also noticed myself finding it harder to find the right words to use in conversations and fumbling around for the correct words, and I've never noticed myself doing it before.

There may be a correlation there, and there may not be. Either way, it's starting to bother me.

I coasted through math with straight A's all the way until pre-calc. Once i got into cosecants and cotangent and things of that sort, I hit the wall.

I blame it partly on the teacher because he was In my opinion a terrible teacher... but i also saw no practical application for any of that and i didn't care to learn it.

The point is, it could literally just be that calc/pre-calc is getting into a different kind of math that is literally more difficult.

And for the sake of actually contributing to the thread. There was a period of about three months a couple years ago where I had a lot of trouble just speaking (or so it seemed to me, my friends said they didn't really notice). I would lose my train of thought, i started stuttering, which i had never really had trouble with.

And then... it just kind of went away. So yeah.

It sounds like you had multiple concussions. Wear a helmet, and take it easy for a while if you get another and go to the doctor
