Alright, sorry if there are already threads on this. I have been search barring for the past couple days and just havent gotten a straight forward answer.

So i got my GoPro 960p the other day and i love it. The quality is amazing, everything I hoped it to be. I have two questions relating to it.

First Question: I need a way to make a pole mount. I would buy the handle bar mount and all that but i just don't have the money for any of those. I know people have mounted it on their ski poles but that would not work for me. I go through poles in like 2 weeks since i have cheap rental ones and just keep getting those. I think its useless to get nice expensive poles. So i need a way to mount it on a pole made out of metal, pvc, anything that is really cheap. So if u can think of anything or know of anything that would be appropriate, please fill me in. +K

Second Question: My editing software for my GoPro. I am using iMovie right now and it is just not cutting it. It has no speedup/slowdown option and just multiple other problems. I would like to know of a video editing software for MAC computers that is free and downloadable. I don't want anything too fancy, just something that i will be able to use to make some decent skiing edits. I also would not like to torrent it as i have already tried that and it was way too confusing. +K

one of the best ways is just to duct tape the extension pieces to a ski pole but if you can find something around your house it would work. a broom handle works but its kinda big. I use a telescopic pole off an old squeegee. if you cant find one either buy somethin from home depot or the handle bar mount whatevers cheaper

just duct tape the extension pieces to something....

Thanks man. By extension you mean like the mounts? ie. curved, and flat. I was trying to get to home depot sometime soon. thanks.

for the pole mount, you can duct tape it to the buckle for the helmet mount and thatll work fine. That sucks for the imovie thing (i guess the old one had speed/slow) but i have not come across anything that is free and works well. truly ur best bet is to stick with imovie or save up for Final Cut Express. FCE is miles better than imovie or any other editing system i have tried. good luck!

pretty sure its only like $100. its when you get into pro that the prices shoots really high. this is not for sure though, just google it.

just going to say that you don't need to worry about slow motion all that much since you have the 960p. slow motion at 30fps starts looking really shitty really fast. but i agree with other people, buy final cut express

The GoPro 960 can shot at 720p doing 60fps just like the regular full Hd cam

exactly, so it's not worth it at all. i would NEVER film in SD given how much HD has become the norm

no, it can't. make sure you double check facts before posting. it shoots at 30fps at 960p, 30fps at 720p, and 60fps at 480(p? if not then it's only 60i which isn't great)

you keep saying that and I never believe it. People have been doing slow motion with 60i, which is not the same as 30p no matter how many times you say it. they have also been doing slow motion with 24p and 30p, which generally looks like shit. See the slow motion scene in Kill Bill when Uma Thurman slices Buck's achilles tendon if you need further proof. Sure you can maybe get decent slow motion down to like 80% with 30p, but any lower than that and it starts getting choppy, making it mostly useless for action sports type slow motion.

I'd rather worry about the lens etc. than about resolution. I've seen many 480 videos that were better than 720 ones because the cam itself was rather crappy.

The Go Pro 960 makes decent slo mo and if you watch edits, the change to 30fps HD parts is hard to notice.

that's the sensor then, not really so much the lens... and it's probably more user error than anything else, just not knowing how to use the camera or color correct properly. plus, you're probably comparing standard def videos made by good filmmakers to HD vids made by bad filmmakers. It's going to be hard to really argue that SD is just as acceptable as HD. a year or two ago, sure. now, not so much.

^agreed and even if you fine in 30p you could use twixtor to make it look better. That's what I do cause my cam only films in 24p 30p and 60i

yea, there are of course motion estimation programs such as twixtor or the optical flow tool in motion that can make slow motion a little smoother. but when just using the speed tool in final cut or another similar program, most 30p or 24p footage can't be slowed down a whole lot.

What I wanted to say was: ostracizing SD just because it's "not HD" is silly.

The price difference between 960 and HD Hero (more than $100) is bigger than the quality difference. That's all. ;)

ok that's understandable, to some degree. like i said, HD is better in the hands of a good filmmaker, always. but in the hands of a bad filmmaker, it is definitely not necessarily better than SD. I was more just trying to point out that if somebody wanted to do slow motion on the GoPro, they should buy the HD Hero rather than the 960p. If the camera is basically the same either way, why not go with HD? but if they are more focused on real time POV footage, then the 960p is a good choice.

Read the comments of wherever you got the torrent from there's sometimes a new one, shut off your Internet and restart your computer, or find a different torrent

If I film in both 1080p and 720p,60fps, will there be any issue with combining the raw footage into an edit?  

Also, I'm a rookie videographer/film-maker.  Does anybody have any recommendations for which video setting I should use on my GoPro?

No, Evan is right, 60i is just 30 frames interlaced, if you know how to handle footage correctly you don't need 60p to produce fine Slow Motion, I shoot 30p on my DVX and the slow motion looks some what better than some of the kids on here that shoot 60p and slow it down in fucking movie maker and imovie, and too the rest of the kids up in this thread, SD is not out, i would much rather have my DVX than a gopro or any other consumer HD camera

Not if you export in 720. And I usually use r5 cause I don't do that much slow mo but if you do alot use r3 or whatever 720p 60 fps is I forget

no, he's not. i don't understand why people have a hard time understanding the logic of it. yes, 60i is 30 frames interlaced. But that's not what he is always saying. He is always saying that 60i and 30p are essentially the same, which is a different statement entirely, and is also entirely incorrect.

Imagine if you were shooting with two cameras side by side, one is 30p and one is 60i: 30p is progressive, which means it records the whole image at once. it records a whole image in one instant, then a whole one in the next. Whereas interlaced records half the image when the other camera records a whole image. HOWEVER, between the first and second progressive frames, the interlaced camera records another half frame, meaning it is recording image data that the progressive camera isn't. It records the same amount of information total, yes, but it records information twice as often. Really isn't a hard concept to understand. Sorry if I'm coming off as a dick but I'm getting so fucking tired of people saying that 60i is the same as 30p. It's not.

And I do know how to handle footage, the comparison you made doesn't really make sense. of course 30p slow motion in fcp would probably look better than 60p slow motion in imovie. it's a completely different level of motion estimation. i guarantee if you shot 30p and 60p with the same camera, you can get smoother slow motion out of 60p if you slow them both down in final cut. Sure 30p might look fine at 80%, but compare the two at 55% and tell me which one is smoother.

k then i was wrong... if youre planning to attach it to something the size of a handlebar (like a ski pole.....?) then get that one. if youre planning on attaching it to something the size of a rollbar then get that one

Hey, if this is a Go Pro question thread, then I have a question.

Lately my Go Pro has been goofing on me. It currently will only take about 15 seconds of video and then record the clip. It all ends up saving to my SD card and I can view it on my comp, but what good is only 15 seconds of video?

I going to try and go through all my settings and see if anythings out of whack first before I assume its fucking up, but I can't find my Go Pro construction booklet, so if anyone is really awesome and wants to type up the settings list, then I could read them and follow then I would be extra stoked.

You could have deleted the footage but not completely... its happend to me before, and in the instruction manual GoPro talk about it. go to the menu>all>press shutter>when ALL is blinking, click shutter again. That should delete everything completely. And I would type it up... but i dont have the time. Im pretty sure you could find it on google somewhere.

So i need to film this weekend and cannot wait for my handlebar mount. I need to make a pole mount quickly. What i did:

Took and old scooter and took of the handle bars and headtube. Took out the actual handlebars. Then i got a peice of sheet metal, measure it all up and cut it specifacly. Then i took the peice of sheet metal and drilled it onto the bars using three screws. Then i just simply put the flat mount onto to sheet metal and viola, you have a pole that starts at about a foot and extends to two feet. Very useful if your looking for a mount real quick or for a long term one.
