Clearly IMO Sammy is more worthy of the SOTY title. Tom may have more spotlight and hype, but Sammy is sooo under rated it's ridiculous. The question of who should take SOTY should be a no brainer.

Tom had a better comp year and produced many good segment, just like sammy who didnt have  such a great contest year.

Sammy killed the bc but tom slayed the urban

this shouldnt be a no brainer.
Now if Jossi or candide would be facing any of these two it would be another  thing as jossi and candide both annhilated the comp scene.

I voted for sammy over candide. shoot me. ever since I saw sammy stomp a styled three on a huge cliff I know at JH I've had way more respect for him. he's got more of a complete package than anyone on the scene right now. that and candide kamera 1 was much better than 2.

Candide winning was the only hope I had for the poll.  I like Sammy, but there is no way he had a better year than Candide.

Given the choice between Sammy and Wallisch, it is Sammy easily.  Wallisch should not have even been one of the 16 in the poll.  Until he shows me he can ski something steep, forget it.

I would really love to have some data on who is voting.  If everyone in Montana votes for one guy, and everyone in New York votes for someone else, well that tells me something.

I would guess that most of the people who vote for Wallisch have never skied a steep, western mountain.  Until they have, their opinion does not mean very much to me.  It is sort of like a contest where people are asked 'what is the most important thing in surfing, tricks in small waves, or getting barreled?'  All the kids who have never been barreled vote one way, all the people who actually have been tubed(and can also do tricks) vote the other way.

I don't know anyone, who is experienced in both steep skiing and urban, who thinks urban is a better measure of a skier.

Years ago I remember looking in SKIING magazine, at their reader poll of the hardest resorts in the country.  Every year, Mad River Glen would place 9th or 10th, while resorts like Mt. Baker, Alpine Meadows, Sugar Bowl, Mammoth, Big Sky, and numerous others would not place.  All of the resorts I mentioned(and many I didn't) are MUCH more challenging than Mad River.  I love Mad River, and I used to ski it growing up, but there is no way it belongs in the top 10 for challenge, anyone who believes that it does is simply ignorant. 

The point is, reader polls are flawed.  They are flawed because not everyone knows enough to have their vote be reasonable.  No one with a diverse skiing background thinks that Tom Wallisch is the skier of the year, but a kid who skis the park at Mt. Snow is given the same input as someone at Squaw, who skis both the park and the Palisades.  Obviously the latter skier has a much better handle on skiing than the former.

Oh well, go vote for Tom Wallisch.  In doing so, you will validate all the things crusty old guys say about Newschoolers.  I was hoping Candide would win, as that would give this site a bit more credibility.

I agree that Candide is the more comprehensive skier whose edits usually cover almost every aspect of freeskiing.

Then again, I really like to base my vote on the entertainment factor of the edits. And in this regard, I have to say that Wallisch simply rules. His Breckenridge POV edit was one of the best park edits ever made. And just because there's a lot of hype surrounding him doesn't mean he doesn't deserve the attention. People celebrate him as the god of park skiing and jibbing...but that's simply what he is. :D

While I agree with you, your criticism implies that the "Skier of the Year" as well as the people voting should be well rounded skiers who have experience on a variety of terrain.

There are people on NS that have never skied anything steeper than a jump landing. There are people on TGR that have never been in a park. The issue here isn't that people aren't well rounded, but that we dismiss skiers and voters that don't share our own ethic of what makes for a great skier.

I can't remember the exact quote, but Will Wesson said that "Skiing is anything you do with skis on your feet," and I think it helps to keep an open mind and remember that we're a community despite the differences in opinion and terrain. Just because I think the indoor turf parks in the UK seem way less fun then shredding pow at any Western resort (and believe me, I do) doesn't mean that I can't identify with the Brit who's having the time of his life out there.

We're skiers because it's fun, no matter where or what we ski on. Pure and simple. I want a "Skier That Has The Most Fun Poll" because it's something that every skier can identify with and accurately judge.

Every skier with something more than a brainstem knows that Freeskier's poll has sucked from the beginning.

Okay Mr. Know-it-all, I guess the only one worthy of voting in this contest is you since you're apparently  so diverse. I didn't know you had to meet certain qualifications in order for your vote to count...in YOUR opinion. Obviously you have alot of anger and resentments towards the discipline of park skiing that has gained so much popularity and rejuvinated the ski industry. It is what it is, and I for one love it and wish I could do it. And thank you for the permission to vote for Wallisch, I've done just that, just like alot of people. May the best rider win!

i will most likely vote sammy c because he kills it so hard everywhere. literally the only thing tom has on him is some style and more rail skills. sammy is the second guy to triple. he slays bc and pillows and shit. he has been the best all around skier for a couple years now but hes pretty much been ignored

Jossi had one of the best park comp seasons by anyone for ages, and Candide ruled the entire big mountain universe this year, so Wallisch vs Sammy kinda just seems like an anti climax.

See, that's where you're wrong, the best rider already lost. I agree that park skiing is a lot more fun to watch than big mountain, but Tom had a shit competition year compared to Candide. Tom had one of the best years as far as park skiing goes, but even there I think guys like Andreas, Bobby, and Jossi were more consistent all season long than Tom. He's a great skier, and I think he'll stay on top for a long time, but he didn't put up comp results this season, his segment in Eye Trip was meh, and I just don't think he deserves to have gotten past the first round. He's a great skier, but he shouldn't be considered for SOTY.

Let people have there own opinions. Tom is the best urban skier of all time, Sammy on the other hand struggles with Urban. Tom doesn't like to ski powder, Sammy does and is good at it. Tom has all 4 doubles, Sammy has a triple. Tom could do a triple if he wanted but he took time to work on his unnatural tricks before he moved on. You can't compare skiers. There is different styles and different disciplines that have to be taken into consideration. This contest is stupid because people are arguing over who should win. The best skier is whoever you personally enjoying watching. There should be no best overall. There should be best at certain disciplines.

Bravo!!  Way back during the first round I made a comment that it would be a good idea to have two categories..BC/Pow "Skier of the Year" AND Park/Big Air "Skier of the Year". I think that format would eliminate ALOT of the conflicts amongst people. Instead it has turned skiers against one another,which is silly.

well i voted for Wallisch, and i grew up skiing in montana and all over the west coast. sammy is incredibly talanted and definatly pushed the sport in all areas this year. that is why he takes second in the poll. Wallisch had an incredible year from winning x games europe and doing well in almost every other comp he did all while filming for 3 video parts. He definatly isnt the most well rounded but he defiantly had the most productive season and defiantly did the most for skiing this season.
