Pretty much, it was an extremely well written blog post with nothing in it. Like, he kept preaching about style vs. technicality, but never got to anything.

I understand what he's saying, and this isn't meant to criticize him (because I don't have an answer to this ongoing debate) but there wasn't much meat in that. I guess he had a few good examples.

Overall, good read... and I'm happy to see pros attempting to take action.

Uh, okay. He explains why it's impossible to judge a competition fairly based on the two criteria that are always used in judging competitions. Seems like something to me.

What I take from this is that skiing is not about competition: it's about skiing. It's fun to watch the Dew Tour and X Games, but I'd rather be on the mountain and leave the comps and the judging to people trying to make money off the sport.

awhile ago jacob pointed out his opinions about 'thug' style and the 'brogan style ride away' was one specific example. people flipped shit on a pretty innocent comment and assumed he hates brogan.

That was surprisingly well written for a Swedish kid. Props Jacob, I definitely can't write that well in a second language.

And to the guy who said it didn't say anything, wtf are you talking about. He outlined the problem with the current big air system, explained how we got there, why style comps don't work, then proposed a solution. It was a succinct and thorough essay.

that system is really sick, and would definitely keep the competition interesting. its actually pretty similar to how the held big air at the x-games last year, and we all know how that turned out.

He did a lot actually. The problem with a lot of debates/discussion is that no one ever clearly defines the actual problem or discusses the problem in itself to a degree that brings clarity to the issue. This is exactly what Jacob did and did an excellent job of laying it out. Most people take definition for granted and just start barking their opinions. Props to Jacob for laying the groundwork for solving the issue... and suggesting a new format for judging ski comps.

How about we stop useless stereotypes and accept that there is ignorance everywhere you go, and not single out "most" people of an entire country. Believe me, there are idiots aplenty in the aforementioned country. As far as English goes, same thing. It is not a second nature, it is about the interest and the lingual ability to further that interest into coherent, flowing text and speech, just as Jacob and Jon have often presented.

Scandinavian countries give birth to and harbour many intellegent people, and one reason for that is the modern establishment of our educational strategy. In Finland, we start Swedish possibly in the 2nd grade, English at the latest in the 3rd grade. Third language options like French, Spanish, Russian etc. are given at the latest in the 5th grade. We are very lingual people at least in theory, but do we all use the chances to develop those skills? No. Not at all. I wish more of us did, as the ability to communicate is the most important thing in the world.

Went slightly off-topic there, but as I've said in other threads about the Street League -option for competitions: go for it. You now have the chance to establish a new brand into the skiing competition scene, much like JOI or JOSS. A more freeform showcasing of the abilities of modern trick-oriented freeskiers, both technical and style aspects highlighted - it could be legendary given the right circumstances.

Personally I think style is a thing I want to see in edits or movies but in contests, as Jacob said, it's prety much impossible to judge. That's also why I don't like the freestyle.ch judging, where the riders have a style and a technical jump.

Imagine how sick it would be to see the top skiers in the world throwing seven of the same tricks.  You really could see the different styles by the riders, and it would take the "boring" out of the big air competitions.  Don't get me wrong, I love to watch the guys throw double corks with crazy grabs every run, but it would be a lot more interesting to watch seven different tricks.  A skier would have to have everything on lock to podium, and combinations of tricks could differ at each event, taking the repetitiveness out of skiing.

At some point, we'll realize that competition skiing is a dead end created to sell products.

The solution to this is easy--go out, ski for fun, and quit worrying about a side of the sport that 99% of skiers don't actually participate in.

Honestly? You don't think people organize competitions for the sake of competing? Or that it inspires people to get out and ski? Saying that it's solely "dead end created to sell products" is a bit overly cynical. Sure competitions help sell gear. For sure. But to say that it's why competitions solely exist is borderline full retard.

in some ways people dont even try to advertise in comps but people want to know what kind of gear they ride. so spansersizing comes into play.

Although i really like mr. Wester I can agree that the whole thing's blown a bit out of proportion and maby little too cynic. Some of the points are great though.
I think you could have different events and venues for the different views with different judging systems. Like some comps organized by companies like surface or jiberish that focus motre on innovation and ivdividual style and them these bigairs with a more structured system based on mostly technicality, might work?
Still these would get lots of hate since the big issue really is that there are a couple people judging from a booth and it's not very objective, and it can't be so I think the easy way out is to keep everything as it is and stop hating on judges because they're just people with a right to their opinions.

i think the problem lies with the name "king of style", i mean why do they call it kos if it has nothing to do with style... if they called it king of tricks (dumb i know, just an example) then people wouldn't care.

also i agree with idea for true style contests, they may not be the most objectively scored comps but who cares, they'd be sooo much better to watch.
