Core shots

so i posted in the ski maintenance thread, but i'm not really expecting a response in there... but anyways,

So after an pimp day of shralping pow at crystal this early season, i was pleasantly surprised to find 4 core shots, each a quarter of an inch- to half an inch in diameter. Also have a nice gouge, not to the core but on the surface about half an inch in width, an inch in length, maybe a 16th of an inch in depth. i have some alpha 2's, clear base. Should I get them repaired right away, or wait a bit knowing that i have some more early season skiing to do?

oh and any estimates of pricing for repairs?

i dont have an estimate but i would wait to get them fixed for the next couple of weeks.

Get them repaired soon, you don't want water seeping into the core and causing the skis to split when the water refreezes while skiing. Base welds for that is probably going to cost you about $100, unless you have a hookup somewhere.

DO it your self?
epoxy and Ptex cut outs depending on how big
dont rely on base welds i have had a couple dont they fall out after a bit but defiantly get fixed
water will get in there and freeze and melt and destroy your skis

You can ask a shop most of the times for a clear stick of ptex for like $5 if that and just do it yourself. dont forget to sand in the shot before you fill it up.

ok so the consensus is get ptex and do it myself. Should i get an epoxy ptex stick for the core shots and a standard ptex for just the scratches? and should it be a candle or just stick?

-clean the shots out
-a layer of epoxy in the bottom mix it well
-cut out a base from a base sheet
-clamp the base sheet down with a metal scraper
-and let sit for 24hrs

Just use epoxy (Araldite or similar is fine). Overfill it then file/sand smooth. The performance loss is negligible, it'll hold strong and very easy to do. Don't even think about drip candles, even on top of a layer of epoxy.

This,

and even if you do a shoddy job as long at it hold up til the real snow comes to protect your core during in early season, then get it professionally done after, Although base repairs are not rocket science.

just ptext it well. I like using black ptex on white/clear bases because at the end of the season you can look back on how badly you thrash your skis.

word. i think i'll epoxy them for now, i'm snowed in at the moment and probably will be for a few more days, and epoxy is all i have on me. when i get the time/ability to take them to the shop, i'll have them do it up if its not a huge chunk outta my wallet.

Sack up and go to a respectable shop for a base weld, P-tex candle shit is good for filling some gouges, but won't hold in the deep ones. I had a good base weld done last year on some blogs with a clear base, you could barely tell that it was there.

So word, i went to my neighborhood ace hardware and picked up some standard epoxy. put it in the core shots, took a scraper and evened it out with the base, wiped off the excess and waiting for it to completely set before i sand it. looks like a good diy cheap-ass base repair until i get enough money to get a real repair done. looks like it'll make a good seal and keep all the moisture from getting in and prevent delams for a bit.
