What Instrument?

sooo NS im thinking about taking up a new instument. what do you guys/girls think i should play? preferably something relatively easy to get the basics down, relatively cheap and something not that many people can do -> not guitar too many people play it. not drums cause i used to play them any other suggestions welcome.

Piano is pretty easy to learn. Left to right = low to high. Flats/sharps are black keys. There is pretty much no learning curve if you already have an understanding of music.

Sitar is awesome but insanely hard, as is any bowed string instrument. If you have the tenacity, I would say electric cello. So damn badass.

huh? Acoustic stringed instruments are far more expensive than electrics. A solid acoustic violin costs about $10,000. A solid electric violin costs about $1,000.

A nice little twist to the flat/sharp arrangement on piano, but it isn't really necessary considering it makes more sense to simply call B# C and E# F, or vice versa. Of course, this is vital to know for notating (key signatures), but what makes piano so easy to learn is the visual/aural relationship (layout and consistency of notes). Stringed instruments are generally hard to grasp this concept on because not all the strings have a consistent note layout due to tunings.

go on youtube and watch some videos of bela fleck play the banjo. you will want to learn that. Im looking into getting one now.

Guitar (yes I read the OP)

I rented a violin myself a 5 days ago and it's darn hard. I'm trying to learn it myself with the assistance of youtube, but still, not much result.

I play the piano all my life now and the guitar for quite some years too. Making music is my life and I figured I'd pick up violin playing as well (too bad it's so darn hard...)

You can get a pretty good sound if you buy the right keyboard with some good weighted keys. Hook it up to some KRK 8" monitors or a bass amp and it can sound very good on a budget.

I played violin for 7 years and I can say that that bowed string instruments almost require formal training. They aren't easy to pick up like piano or guitar because they are so damn picky and good technique is mandatory. On the bright side, they are extremely dynamic instruments, so I'd say it's worth it.

Yeah, I play guitar, and I'll be honest it's pissing me off. Like I love the instrument and I hope to never stop playing, but it is near impossible for me to find a good drummer or vocalist. EVERYBODY plays guitar.

I suggest piano. That would be awesome. And the harmonica. Those have already mentioned many times, but there you go again. Maybe I will convince you.
