Te amo (verb amar) is usually reserved for your lover and not your friends or family, although I'm sure there are different countries/different ways. For gringos is best to stick to this pattern and we won't have to worry about doing it

Te amo is definitely i love you like a girlfriend, not a relative.
and for will you be my girlfriend, i'm not completely sure, but Quieres ser mi novia works, the direct translation of that is do you want to be my girlfriend
