Save the date, mark the calendar and spread the word.

November 24th is the day ordinary citizens stand up for their rights, stand up for liberty, and protest the federal government's desire to virtually strip us naked or submit to an "enhanced pat down" that touches people's breasts and genitals. You should never have to explain to your children, "Remember that no stranger can touch or see your private area, unless it's a government employee, then it's OK."

The goal of National Opt Out Day is to send a message to our lawmakers that we demand change. No naked body scanners, no government-approved groping. We have a right to privacy and buying a plane ticket should not mean that we're guilty until proven innocent. This day is needed because many people do not understand what they consent to when choosing to fly.

Yeah. I'd just fly the day before. Liberty is the big thing though. This government just keeps getting worse and worse. I want my freedom back. I'm prob not gonna fly at xmas because of those scanners and the groping.

and its established that this idea is stupid. Here's what will happen:

passengers request pat downs.

TSA gives pat downs, but it slows security lines down.

At a certain time, each of the TSA officer's shift ends, and they go home and stop caring about the passengers.

The passengers however, remain in line, at the airport.

The boarding times come and go, and the planes leave with most likely lower loads.

The idiot passengers, who missed their plane due to their own stupidity, go to the airlines and demand refunds.

The airlines tell them no refund because they didn't make it to the gate in time. Rebooking is a hassle because its a busy travel day, so most flights are full.


So, in the end...passengers are delayed in getting to their final destination, screwing up their thanksgiving, and accomplishing absolutely nothing but ruining their own plans. They then blame it on how long security took, and suddenly optout gets a ton of publicity...but very little of it is positive.

While I don't necessarily support the full body scanners/pat downs, this opt out day is stupid. They airline company doesn't care if you want to be an ass and take longer, when the plane ticket says departure at 5:45, that plane is leaving at 5:45 with or without you. You aren't even hurting the security workers, they're still working a 9-5 shift and regardless of how many people opt out, they're still leaving at 5. The only people you will hurt with this are the countless people who will miss their flights because assholes like this are just jamming up the line. You've already paid for the plane ticket, the plane could care less if you are actually on it, so in fact you are doing nothing but pissing off innocent people. /rant

Except that if there is a massive clog up in security there will be plenty of passengers who are not participating in this 'opt out day' who will still miss their flights.

Because of this, the airlines cannot assume that everyone who's late was an 'activist' and will have to provide some form of customer service. If they end up saying that you missed your flight, we're keeping your $$ and you're not getting out of here, they're going to wreck their business.

Beyond that, flight crews that get held up in security will keep flights grounded.

You guys clearly are making the argument that people have a choice about flying or not -- the airlines will have to understand this too. They can't just choose to screw over their passengers. If there are too many unhappy customers, it'll kill their business.

False, security for them is very light and there are never any hold ups. Meaning they always get to their flight on time and the fact they enter security hours before the plane leaves.

they'll end up offering some minimal compensation. However the planes and flightcrews will not wait for the passengers. If absolute worst comes to worst for the airlines, they'll fly the plane with however many people made it on. A plane isn't an extra commodity that can sit and wait for passengers. It's going to be needed somewhere else at a certain time for more passengers. If the airline doesn't fly it, it can have a huge effect on the rest of the network, and cause massive delays everywhere, in some cases, literally world wide. Same deal with pilots. Once they clock in, they can only be on duty for so long.

and its not as if the airlines havent kept the money before, while screwing people over. For some reason people always feel most entitled when they miss a plane through their own fault.

their business will take a hit, but not much, because when it comes down to it, people will usually choose the 1 minute of security checks, and the 3 hour flight over driving 25hours. They may not be happy about it, but they will.

100% exactly. Any longer than 10 minutes and they pull the plane away. Some pilots just leave when the departure time is. They really don`t give a shit about passengers, which i agree with.

This, plus the fact that I believe as of now, airlines have to pay a federal fine if a certain percentage of their planes are delayed. And I guarantee they would rather stomach a some bitching and small pay outs here and there than have to deal with a significant fine.

If you are going to be a jackass about the amazing privilege of flying, then you just shouldn't be allowed to fly. Problem solved. Airports less crowded. I think instead of "Opt Out Day" there should be "Hard On Day". All the guys who are flying should just pop some Viagra and then utilize the waistband tuck before going through security. Then when they go through, they will decline the body scan so they have to get felt up. The TSA agents will be feeling around when they encounter a "firm, cylindrical object" near the guys waist/groin. The TSA agent will then of course ask the dude going through security, "Sir, what is this?" to which he will respond, "MY DICK." All the TSA folks will be so disgusted by the fact that they have spent their entire work day touching dudes boners that will ask for a change in policy or they are going to quit. The government and airlines of course cannot afford a massive resignation of security personnel, so the policy will be changed.

Flightcrews won't be backed up in security. They have their own line to go through, and most of them don't go through the same security methods anyway. (really, what would be the point of checking the pilot for a bomb when he can just push down to kill everyone?)


severe weather is a legitimate reason to cancel flights, and it does cause chaos around the networks. Passenger stupidity however, is not one.
