Topic: Form
I want everyone to start thinking about the solids and voids that surround us. Although we readily identify most objects with a word, I want to stray from this and photograph in a way that emphasizes and celebrates the form of the subject. This can be achieved through an abstraction of the subject that places priority on its essential shape--rather than a building, you photograph modularity and materiality, instead of a portrait, you have pattern and texture. Think of color, texture, and light, and how you can use these to redefine the identity of what you are photographing.
You can approach this formally, or you can take other paths…painting!
I want people to take a break from normal photographing--focus on your subject, click the shutter, etc, and deconstruct what we are really doing with our cameras. Photography is a way of flattening a 3-dimensional world, so it is already incredibly abstract in nature. Use this to your advantage, and try to leave the traditional ruts we all get stuck in for a bit--I hope that by doing this, you can all benefit tremendously by learning to approach photography from a slightly different angle.
