Trying to find a Car

Hey NS,

I am going to be getting my N soon and i was wondering what a good car would be for heading up the mtn with probably somthing AWD but i was wondering if anyone could recomend somthing cheap and good on gas. thanks for your time.

What is your definition of cheap? I just got a 1992 Jeep YJ for $2800 and its pretty sick in the snow. It also goes almost anywhere you want. Just go on craigslist and start browsing within your price range and see what looks sick.

subarus come up in car discussions so often because they really are good cars. you could find an older outback for a couple thousand, have plenty of room for stuff and have minimal issues with snow along with pretty good gas mileage. there are plenty of other good cars too of course.

i have a fwd 08 civic. last time it was driven in snow my mom laid it into a wall. im looking to sell it for about 12 g. oh it also slides when it rains or there is leaves on the ground. but there is an ipod hookup

no, never buy a bmw for the purpose of having an awd car. personally i would only buy their rear wheel models, and that car is pretty much impossible to find anyway.
but obviously this kid knows nothing about cars so for the sake of saving him a headache id recommend a subaru. more importantly than anything you need a nice set of tires though. awd with shitty tires will do nothing for you

if you can find a cheap 4runner they are great. the 4cyl are good on gas too.

subarus handle well, good on gas but are a bitch to work on so not great if you are getting a cheap one

basically just get a non RWD car or an SUV, get winter tires and a roof box if you need it.

Subaru's are a great all wheel drive car, i had an imprezza and loved it. but parts are often pricy...and they can be pretty hard to work on sometimes, The boxer engine can in some cases make it even more of a challange to service some aspects (boxer engins are different from an inline or a V as they lie flat and cylynders fire opposing eachother on a horrizontal plane.)

However there are many other options...budget is probably your main concern.....if price were no object i'd suggest a 4 wheel drive pickup truck.....trust me i live on a farm and live and breath trucks.....if you want first tracks you're best chance after or during a storm will be a truck.....but make sure you go 4 wheel drive. two wheel drive trucks are rear wheel drive and is almost the worst thing you can drive in the winter.

As said earlier if your roads are plowed and you're looking for minimum specs go front wheel over rear wheel drive....the cars are easier to handle being pulled through than pushed.


so simple answer:
#1 - 4 wheel drive truck (NEVER 2 WHEEL DRIVE) ((lots of room in the box for skis))
#2 - all wheel drive car (Subaru Rocks! but has drawbacks)
#3 - front wheel drive car
#0 - once again never rear wheel drive.....especially a pickup truck many people think they have a truck and will be ok but with rear wheel drive in a pickup there us usually very little weight in the back and and it will not end well

yeah no worries. I am by no means saying not to get a subaru, just be prepared for a shit ton of work if something goes wrong.

why? because they are built to perform really well. A 4WD is a much simpler system all around, but wont benefit you as much if you don't know how to use it.

also if you get a subaru, do not get the 4speed automatic. get a 5 speed. The stress involved with winter driving in mountains is a lot considering the limited power that the engine has. In my opinion the auto is not built tough enough to handle it. Transmission work on a subaru is seriously a pain in the ass like you literally have to remove the entire exhaust all the way from the manifold and lift the engine just to drop the tranny.

There's a god damn thread about this every other day. Just Search. You don't need to ask newschoolers what kind of car to get anyways. Just buy an AWD car or get blizzaks or both. What really matters is your ability to drive in the snow and your tires.

lol what the hell are you talking about? in tests the IX beat the best audi and subaru from the same era by a longshot in every catagory in snow. having driven one, an sti, s4, a4, and new wrx and more in snow, the IX is noticeably more controllable and predictable than any other. and the ABS system is honestly the best system ive ever seen. (though it might only be on the 88's)
e30's are tanks. reliable as hell, parts are cheap, its not uncommon to see them go well over 400,000 miles on the stock motor and tranny.
depending on the model a subaru will most likely have more problems. they have lots of tranny problems, engines are ok, but noting special when it comes to reliability. they just arent as "overbuilt" as other cars.

and what do you mean that model is impossible to find? what model? the ix? or a rwd bmw? there are plenty of ix's for sale to choose from at one time.

I own a 330xi and my family has had many XIs. They are great cars and they are unstoppable in the snow with the right tires. But shit breaks on the AWD bmws constantly, I am extremely good about taking care of my car and doing preventative maintenance. Still there is almost always something broken on my car.

I love these cars to death but if you don't love them and know how to fix them, they are a bad move. If you go to a dealer or independent shop with an awd bmw for basic repairs you will be quoted thousands. The bmw awd system works great but it breaks stuff all the time. I am constantly replacing CV joints and boots, my steering rack is always leaking and all kinds of axle problems. Same goes for the e30 IXs, parts break all the time and are very pricey and getting harder to find not to mention almost all e30 IXs will have serious rust issues at this point.

Unless you plan to maintain the car yourself or you have a shit ton of money, don't get an AWD bmw.

your comparing two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT cars and AWD systems.

The XI awd system is known for being unreliable, very over complicated expensive, and its computer controlled. there is sooooo much more to go wrong, and it all costs a shit ton more.

the ix's awd system is extremely simple, completely mechanical. and compared to other awd systems, cheap.

the transfer cases are known to be somewhat weak, usually because of neglect. all that means is you have to find one in good working order. which can still be found for cheap as hell. and if you do fuck up the transfer case its 1000 dollars that you will never have to spend again. my friends ix has 220,000 miles, stock tranny and awd system, he's got a built m20 with something like 200-215 at the wheels, he launches the thing all the time, and beats the crap out of it. he had the transfer case checked out like 2 months ago and it was working perfectly. the transfer case is literally the only iffy part on the car, and even thats only 1000 dollars for a new one, less for a rebuild.

other than that the car is reliable as hell, parts are sooooo much cheaper than an e46. i know alot of people with e30's one's got over 300,000 miles on stock everything, he's owned the car for like 5 years and done nothing but regular oil changes and crap.

in my experience e30's are alot more reliable than subaru's. ive seen alot of both in my friends shop, and its almost always the subaru's that are in for repair.

but yeah, the 330xi and the 325ix have literally nothing in common except the 3 in the name. and they are complete opposites when it comes to reliability.

Shit my bad, My brain went all dyslexic. I just noticed you said IX in the beginning of your post. 325IXs are fucking beats in the snow if they're running right, my buddy has had a few. Still I wouldn't say the awd E30 components are cheap. I still stand by what I saw about the rust problems with them as well as anything like seals bushings, whatever will need replacing

rust can be a problem, but if you have any more than 2 grand to spend its extremely easy to find a rust free example. 5 grand will buy you an amazing condition e30.
but i will agree that buying a rusty beater e30 is a bad idea.
and AWD components are expensive on any car, the ix isnt any more expensive than most other awd cars, probably on the cheaper end.

Thing about subarus is that they all get rusty. Id go with something foreign definately like an audi, saab, volkswagen, etc. Jeep cherokees are also really good in the snow

for your low budget, buy the NEWEST, LOWEST MILEAGE, BEST CONDITION car you can find.

then

buy a good set of snow tires

if you actually know how to drive and get used to a particular car (awd, front, rear, doesn't matter) you'll be juuust fine.
