put your camera on bulb mode and lock up (slide it up) the shutter button on this thing ^, then you can leave your shutter open for however long you want without having to hold down the shutter manually on the actual camera

What kind of long exposure are you talking about?

1 second? 10 seconds? 1 minute? 1 hour?

There is so much info available if you just use google.

But you're going to need a tripod, remote (wired or wireless), bulb setting to start with. I'm probably forgetting a lot.

you don't need a bulb setting just take a couple dozen 30sec exposures and stack them using deep sky stacker thats what I do.

I'm going to try this. I just do straight 30 minute exposure and am tired of waiting 2 hours for the photo to process. plus i just picked up a intervelometer! whoo

You scroll the shutter speed to the amount of time you want the shutter to be open. Guess what happens then, it stays open! So if you go to a 30 second exposure your shutter will stay open for 30 seconds, HOW WILD!

n00bz need to learn how to use their cameras.

there should be a 30second exposure setting ON THE CAMERA and if that's not enough then get the first thing posted in the thread. it'll allow you to lock the shutter in the open position.

If I may thread jack for a moment....

I can't get a star trail attempt to work.  I can't figure out how to get the stars in focus or how to get them to get the kind of exposure I want.  I read a bunch of info and can't find the specific info I want.

Too vague, why wont anyone ever spell out their problems.. what do you mean not in focus? Set it to near infinity and a f stop higher than 5.6 and you'll undoubtedly be golden.

I had to question, because what you are having trouble with seems to be a such simple problem. Not in focus? Focus the lens. Still not in focus? Find a beefier tripod.

To give you a head start.. this photo was taken at pitch black. couldn't see the mountain at the beginning of the exposure. the rising sun helped bring the mountain in.
Exposure: 30 min
F: 10.0
ISO 160

One thing I've had to watch for when focusing is not using auto-focus. and not just setting it to max infinity. depending on the lens, it will let you go over infinite focus (both my 10.5mm and 17-70mm do) 
If you have LiveView use it to focus the lens. and use a remote of timer to trigger the camera. just the slightest movement in the camera will blur the picture.

Are you sure thats a 30min shot? Looks more like a 10 minute. I had one from this weekend that was around 20 and the trails seem a lot longer on mine. Also, where the hell did you get a clear nalgene bottle. Ive been looking for one.

yeah I just checked the metadata. 1800 seconds. I think the rising sun might have washed out the stars a little bit. and the Nalgene i got a few years ago at a shop in corvallis. it even has a lime green cap!

damn, sounds like a baller nalgene. Blows my blue and green ones out of the water lol.

But yeah I shot with the north star, and this was only 980 seconds so ~16 minutes and the trails look around the same length? Oh and if you were ever wondering what amp glow looks like on a ccd sensor, here ya go.

you are zoomed in more, making the distance of star travel seem longer.

Hes using a 10.5mm, I'm using a 12-24, I kind of doubt 1.5mm will affect the trails that significantly..
