Making your own skis?

I haven't made any skis but have made some longboards in a vacuum bag. I think the easiest way for skis would be to copy the design of the line stepup http://lineskis.com/skis/stepup as it would be quite simple to make. For the wood you would want some high quality maple, edges are steel and you can buy them in a strip and base is normally UHMW and can be bought in rolls. Make a mold for the ski and laminate it up in one of these http://www.bagpress.com/How_It_Works.html.

i was thinking about it last year but it looks like a lot of work and you need a press and some other shit. i was thinking about just shaping some 2x4s and slaping some bindings on there.

You need a lot of expensive equipment, and its a very labor intensive process. Also, if you're not making big batches, it'll end up costing more than just buying a pair from a retailer.

There was a thread in SG about a year or so ago by some kid who wanted to make his own skis and I think he came back a few months later and posted the final product and I dont think they were half bad. If I can find it Ill post the link.

I tried to look quick but searching anything with the word ski or skis (i.e. how to make skis, making skis etc....) in it is useless. There are thousands of threads.

Not actually making your own, but they will make them exactly how you want them down to the artwork at a base price of $333. The prices goes up as you make more changes and what not.

My friend made me a pair at their "factory" They turned out pretty dreamy.

Building your own skis is 100% achievable and seems to be something that's getting more and more popular.  I know some people who are planning on putting together their first legit ski very very soon

You can do it for quite cheap if you like a thrill and high risk garage mechanics. To do it safely and to get good results, it does take a little money.

My buddy chris makes his own skis. He spent 3 years making a ski press and a CNC machine in his garage. He has made 3 skis so far that are really sick. He can now make base graphics and topsheet graphics.

Its a fun and rewarding process, but be prepared to invest a lot of time and money, even when doing it as cheap as possible. I've completed one pair, and have a splitboard close to done. Check out https://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/473769/ for the thread of the first pair I made. Ski Builders is an incredible resource, and grafsnowboards.com is helpful as well. But it's definitely doable, and if you have the time and money I would suggest trying it, it's super fun.

Isn't the guy who founded that a laughing stock 'round here? I thought he went under when the quality of his skis stunk and ns threw a temper tantrum over it. If he is still going that's awesome, more power to him.

Yes. From what I heard from other ski industry folk he was not a good businessman and used subpar quality building techniques/materials. Pretty sure he's not even in business anymore.

Building your own skis is less expensive than you think, but you definitely need some time on your hands. I had this all planned out a couple years back but unfortunately I never found the motivation or money to carry it out. skibuilders.com has all the info you need.
