one other thing: the right tires are key.

my 2006 impreza 2.5i + studded snows + 5MT (not as good awd as in the 4EAT i know, but much more controllable) = a great snow vehicle

last weekend, we were in a parking lot hitting urban and a plow came past, making a huge snow drift at the lot's exit. this was about 3 feet tall and i was able to get through without any digging or anything.

Man I do miss my forester. Loved the independent suspension and AWD (for the most part). Gas mileage was great too unless you had weight in the car.

I don't miss this kinda stuff though.

A locking center diff would have made this super easy and saved me some floor mats...

its really sorta impossible to say that there is one best ski car... but a few of my favorites are:

STI, S4, A4, Land Rvoer Discovery, Jeep grand cherokee, toyota tacoma

really anything with AWD or 4WD....

I like the SFA and coilover combination. Also, that suspension is NOT cheap. The 454 is a HUGE engine though, so unnecessary.

Any truck with a locking rear diff, and 4wd will kick ass. If you can get a solid fron axle and rock locker....even better. I've seen a fair share of subys stuck in the ditch, while trucks drive by.

I think it is just as easy to run a truck off the road into the ditch on ice as it is to with a subaru. Actually it's probably easier in a truck. However if you know what you are doing, you are gonna be able to drive through way gnarlier shit in a 4wd than a subaru ever could.

you also really have to be careful about which AWD system you are buying. The 5speed one is 50/50 split and there are a couple of different systems for the auto transmission. One of them is apparantly really good, but the one I drove was like 90% front wheels under normal condition which was no fun and had a weird traction control system and was all around just a different ride than I got from my subaru, it was like driving a honda AWD.

you can never go wrong with suby, there awesome snow cars,and land rovers discoverys have a computer in them that makes near impossible to slide and are awesome for snow. and if you wanna go cheaper you can always get an old pathfinder or 4runner.

Just bought a 2011 Subaru Impreza 2.5i Premium. Got the racks and everything. Going from a FWD to and AWD is a treat indeed. And that is my ski mobile.

this guy is so good as a ski car. room for you and seven friends to all be seated comfortably, even in the back row, if you have a ski rack on it. otherwise it's just awesome. so much room for stuff and the four wheel drive systems works amazingly well. i drove it today and yesterday in snow to and from the mountain and it does so well in the snow. engage four wheel drive and it drives anywhere no questions asked. this car has been in my family since 01 when we bought it and it's got 180000 miles and still crushin.
