i have a tahoe and an impreza, and i will take the impreza for snow driving any day, other than if there is 3 feet of snow on the road. seriously, even if the snow is above the subies bumper its the better choice

im just sayin... 2 winters ago it snowed about 2 feet over night, my dad broke trail for a bunch of imprezas goin up the road.

the plow truck driver was in one of those subies...

just sayin... the pickup outperformed everything else that day

i like the light bar :) ive never driven a new sti in snow but ive driven some old ones a couple times, and they tend to push pretty bad at turn in, just seemed really hard to get it to bite very well. ive heard the new sti does better, have any input on what its like in snow? a friends debating between a new sti and a 335xi, i wanna give him some advice.

this car is FAR superior to the old ones{I have had 4 subies-1 bugeye WRX sedan, 1 wagon, a leg wagon and this GR sti}
The hatch is far more rigid and with minor modifications is truly a pleasure to drive. I race with the SCCA and can only run a fswaybar, replacement struts, race tires and a cat-back exhaust(stock class). With these mods(minus the struts) this car is a dream. Here are some vids:

this is on stock tires, but you can see, even with a sway bar it is not plowing through slaloms or corners.

I guess it comes down to how much $$ he wants to spend, the bmw will be close to 20g extra I believe..thats a lot of room for some major upgrades on his sti

Also i believe the 335xi is heavily biased to the rear as far as output is concerned so if he's in a snowy area for months on end that bmw might not be the greatest choice..but really those are two amazing machines and i wish i was in his situation of trying to choose between the two

also, remind them that the Bimmer has a LOT less space and costs more in repairs/parts/labor

well he's looking at used 335's which can be found for under 30k. and we know someone who owns a european car dealer/repair place and can get parts and work for super cheap.

and as for the rear bias id think that could be better in snow since under acceleration the rear is weighted alot more, so having more power to the tires with the most grip makes sense.

i keep telling him to get a rwd 335 or 135 and get nice snows, but he wont :(

ok good to know, the older sti's push like crazy, i know of some people running no front sway bar on their track sti's in an effort to get rid of the understeer. (which is a bad idea IMO) and that was his and my biggest concern. it was just annoying in the snow, you could not get it to do what you wanted, using the e brake was basically the only way to enter a turn in anything but huge understeer. only thing he doesnt like is the weight, though its no heavier than the 335 its a big jump in weight from the old sti's, i guess thats the price you pay for a proper chassis :)

335i's are soo sick

but just be aware that if u get the xi, it doesn't come with sport suspension even if u get the sport or M package. U get the sport steering wheel, seats, wheels, oil cooler, and 155mph governor, but no sport suspension. Idk about the new 5 or 7 series, but BMW never put sport suspension on any of its AWD e46, e60, or e90 sedan/wagons.

AWD or 4WD in any snow car is a must but tires have a lot to do with how well you're gonna mob around... For instance my low tread bfg mud terrains are pretty shitty in wet snow, but they bomb the pow... I had some bridgestone a/t duelers in my old silverado and that thing was unstoppable.

I don't see the point of buying a locker for a non 4wd vehicle unless you're racing in the desert. If the truck is stuck in 2wd it's stuck in 2wd whether both wheels are going spinning or not. It could help in some situations, but driving with a locked rear end in the snow is downright scary if you don't' know what you're doing, especially in 2wd only.

Think of this... driving along and right tire hits ice so it starts spinning. an OPEN rear end would allow it to spin while the left tire maintained it's speed.

LOCKED would make the left tire spin faster, thus causing a *shit your pants moment,* especially if you are traveling at near highway speeds.

But yeah, lockers are sweet - selectable lockers like ox, arb, or eaton are nifty. I wish I had eaton lockers over arbs...

lawl, locked differentials have ALOT more traction than open.

obviously im not suggesting he just welds his diff or something. if he had a detroit in the back, and lets say, had to get out of an icy little climb, as opposed to being fucked, he could lock it up and crawl out.

When does a Detroit Locker lock?
The Detroit Locker is locked up 100% in a straight line or if you are spinning. The unit unlocks in a turn for the wheel that is turning the fastest.

it only unlocks if your off the gas just like any other lunchbox style locker. i have a detroit in front and a aussie in the back, and im about to take them both out for winter because driving on the highway in a storm is unpredictable and scary.
