What is the best car to get you into the mountains on icy or snowy roads?

Fail # 2.

I will clarify for anyone else that is confused. I was NOT talking about Yakima/Thule boxes but the gear box that is found on the Xterra roof racks. I really do not see the point of having them, but if it works as a beer fridge during skiing, I can't ask for much more than that.

as an 18 year old i use it to transport beer/liquor/weed because if i get pulled over and searched they'll never find the shit on the roof. hell, i didn't even know i had that compartment for the first few weeks i had an xterra. the compartment in the trunk is pretty big/stealthy especially when covered with a rug or carpet.

my family used to have one of these (2wd though). The LE comes with an ice maker/refrigerator hooked up to the AC lines as well as a fully retractable HUGE sunroof. You can fit a full size mattress in the back.

K i gotta say it now....

Honda Element = AWD 4cyl. Gas mileage isn't terrible. Clearance could be better though. Here is a positive also, it can sleep 2 people comfortably. You can remove the seats and put a double bed in the back.

It is very practical if you want something that has a lot of room inside.

I would avoid audi's in general due to the cost of maintaining them. I would consider subaru since they are certainly a very practical vehicle for a skier.

I understand that you love/need/worship your Yakima/Thule box. However, I WAS NOT talking about them one bit!

To reiterate my last post, the Nissan Xterra comes with a gear box to store wet gear/etc after a day riding. I think it is a gimmick and really do not see the point of having it. Therefore, I would only really use it as a beer fridge while I am skiing. Did you even see the picture I posted? Of the Xterra roof? How do you even go on mentioning the lack of space in your car after that?

Does this finally make sense to you?

I am glad you enjoy your ski box, really I am.

My old truck, goddamn i miss this thing, it went anywhere i wanted to take it, including ditches and snowdrifts. Never got this thing stuck to where i couldnt get out myself.

id have to disagree.

of course on a road covered in packed snow/ice, a lower center of gravity is better.

but i used to have a tahoe. it would shred through anything, never got stuck. had crazy grip in snow. and never any trouble stopping.

that's ok, I currently have a expedition and an impreza, so I know what you're talking about, shreding through anything.

But you're still wrong, the only place an SUV will perform better is in deep snow that would otherwise high center a car. It's just science bro.

well first I will clear this up, it's technically a "standard box" (everyone calls that a shortbox)

The question was the best ski car. not best vehicle for a contractor.

A toyota sienna can fit 5 sheets of plywood. Should I get one of those? will it also fit dirtbikes and sleds? Can I dump a load of gravel in it? Tow a wakeboard boat? This week I have had 6 people in my truck at least twice. Last time I carried a sheet of plywood was in september (and It worked just fine at an angle)

Next time I am in 4WD, driving up a snowy road with 5 people in the truck, skis in the back and boots under the seat, I'm probalby gonna be thinking "damn, what a useless vehicle, can't even fit a sheet of plywood"

Pussy about long bed? I can drive a long-bed truck dude, it's the same fucking thing. Anyone who can drive, can drive either. I thought practicality when I bought my truck. for me an extended-cab shortbox is more practical. Comments like that are why people call trucks penis extensions. Vehicle size has nothing to do with how much of a pussy you are.

If I got the truck I wanted, I would have gotten what you have, but with a big block and shortbed. I love that truck.

PS my shortbed truck is longer than your longbox anyways ; )

I standard box will still fit a fullsize length of plywood. All you gotta do is sit it on the edge of the tailgate or drop the tailgate. Standard boxes are 6.5 ft i believe, which will fit anything you want.

Hell i hauled mulch, wood, gravel, MANY trees and my four wheeler all the time in the truck i posted earlier.

I don't get why that frustrates you. Not everyone needs a full-size, V8.  There are advantages to both kinds of trucks.

I wish I had a smaller truck sometimes. This entire autumn I would have been much better off with a tacoma. Driving in a city like Victoria sucks with a 1/2 ton. Even when I am in Calgary I drive my s-10 way more to save on gas. My dad always drives the tacoma over the 2500 as well unless he needs it.

Well right now I just use my car. A Chevy Cobalt Sport Coupe.  It has fold down seats so I can store my skis.  I'm not a fan of roof racks, since I usually have my equipment in my car at all times.  The front wheel drive and good mileage is a plus since it is 100 miles of usually bare highway round trip.

I will probably get a WRX 5-door in a year or two.  But if I decide to get a second car for just skiing, i.e. the couple days where its awd or chains in the pass, I might look at an Xterra.  I didn't realize they were only $25 thousand.

Are you kidding me? my ford F350 superduty gets 20 mpg and has so much room for boots and gear inside the cab.Taking 4 people is no chore because its a crew cab. You also get the ability to spray black smoke at al the ricers in your way.
