Some questions about Sunday River.

Sooo, my family is possibly going to get a house in Bethel, Maine, which would mean that our new home mountain would be Sunday River. My mom is all about tree skiing and I wanna know how it is at the river. I've heard that it isnt that good, but there has got to be few stashes around right? (you dont have to give that info away, I know how secretive some people can be haha) What is the river like overall for the glades/off-piste stuff? What are the best things about SR? I'm pretty excited to hit their park which I hear is good. I'll probably get a lot responses about how sugarloaf is better, but what do you guys think?

As far as tree skiing, Sunday River is still really good, obviously Sugarloaf beats Sunday River in this area, but the River has some great glades and trees, the park at Sunday River destroys Sugarloaf, and it's not always cold and windy. Oh and, Bethel is a rockin' town during ski season.

sunday river is awesome...the tree skiing is really fun too..we have some nice glades in certain spots if you know where to go(the better ones arent marked on the map) the parks are super fun too and fit for all skill level of freeskiiers

Also, I don't know how many people know about this, but there is now boundary to boundary skiing.  Meaning you can ski anywhere within the boundaries as long as the terrain you are skiing isn't off of a closed trails and doesn't end up on a closed trail.  Super stoked for this.

sugarloafs jumps are much, much better than sunday rivers and there parks are really catching up to sunday river, got even more jibs for this year

ya, i am a much bigger fan of sugarloaf parks. sunday river has better jib features, but their park crew is either lazy or understaffed for the amount of features that have to be maintained. and dont get me started on the flat landing/takeoffs on the sunday river jumps. the good news is that sunday river is owned by the same company as sugarloaf, so you will be able to shred the new glades at sugarloaf for free.

Yes it is. Really, BROSEIDON and myself have found many stashes all of which require a good powder day. There are actually quite a few spots. My dad's buddy lives in bethel, and two summers ago he my dad and a couple other guys went from Spruce, to Jordan Bowl and they made 3 glades. The best one is on the Aurora side facing Northwest. It is visible form the Jordan Chair, if you look to the left, just before you go over Icaramba(i think) youll see it on the face Aurora face. Its a long narrow trail, that has a river you have to jump, and it kicks you out at the bottom of Jordan.

SR is great place to be. Sugarloaf has better glades, but sunday river has more undiscovered or hidden ones. Another thing is that the Loaf its always windy and cold. Usually the upper lifts are closed due to high winds. In the the next year or two Sugarloaf will pobably beat SR, as they expand onto burnt Mountain. I like the atmosphere a little more at SR. The Cantina del Rio, The Matterhorn, The Foggy Goggle, SUDS, and Bobs BBQ are all places (some being bars) that you wont to check out. The Matterhorn is by far the best. Bethel is popping town during the winter. Theres always something going on whether its a concert or the big events like the Dumont Cup or the NCAA Div.III games. Everyone is super friendly and the ski shops are pretty good too.

SR's park i feel is better than the loafs. SR has more of a variety of rails than the loaf does. Sugarloaf has a much better maintained and built pipe but the kids at SR are really chill and dont hassel others in the park. The Loaf is filled with racers too!

Loaf has Seth Wescott, SR has Dumont

word, sloafs park last year had the flow of the jib park and had a nice double line. sr's park is fun but its too short

there are no cliffs like sugarloafs cantdog, and this new one on burnt mountain but SR has an old trail called the spruce cliffs. Look at a trail map, go to the top of spruce peak, look at the left side, and you should see a bare spot (you can see this from the top of barker too). That was an old trail. It was very trecherous so ski patrol shut it down. I have heard someone say that a lot people were seriously injured or died. If you go down risky business and after 200 feet of so youll see a roped off entrance its pretty visible. I dont know anyone who has done it. From the looks of it, it seems pretty nuts. A foot and a half or two of pow would be a wise choice if you are going to do it. Its just real steep.

On the left side of white cap theres a small cliff. Its a good 15 feet. I havent hit but i have seen it(the day i went was icey as shit!). I guess a bear lives there (this was 2 years ago) and its pretty easy to get to. Just go to shockwave and when you just get on the trail you'll see a little hump like thing on the left side. Go in the woods right at the bottom of that. Bush wack for a while and youll eventually come to it. You'll know if you can see the entrance to the access road and the brew pub is visible too.

Yeah I wouldn't suggest doing it.  After hanging around on the SR community boards, word was that the base is mostly all rock.  So unless you have super good coverage you'll be hitting lots of rock.  Also, because it is rock, it doesn't hold the snow well at all.  I would be interested to hear from someone that has done it but it seems like it'd be too sketchy unless there was a good amount of snow

jack frost isnt bad, it has a lot of racing stuff but i like it. Piste off ski shop was the best until it closed. Pinnacle is a snowbaord shop but they have pretty good apparel from oakley and a huge variety of goggles

i know of places, if you find me ill show you, i do not feel comfortable giving away my secrets on NS, as for stuff to do in bethel, get to know kids from gould and go to the skatepark, or go to the grizzly ski bar, or have a tea party at cfergs ;)

Try the cliff under the spruce triple. I know someone who did a 180 off of it which is pretty ballsy considering the rock thats near the landing 20-30ft away. It also can be a pretty flat landing if you huck with any speed off the stump.

Fun though on a pow day. Dew it, Dew it.
