I used to be a liberal and then relaity took hold and I was still a liberal becuase I realize that mainstream news (in general for the most part) is not reality! it is propaganda! look at it, manistram news companies are owned by rich white men, don;t you think they want someone like Bush in office so they can stay ritch/become more ritch?

i agree that capitalism does help us progress far better than communism, but it also creates classes within society

classes are not necessariy bad so long as everyone is provided for. we are talking about a utopian world here...in which every interaction occurs without waste. meaning that labor consolidation would allow workers to wield greater power over wages and benefits. Ayn Rand's philosophy of objectivism (which is perfect in theory but fails when put to the test) is what we would call utopian capitalism. Read 'Atlas Shrugged' and get back to me.

^Ignore him, Atlas Shrugged is absolute trash and not worth your time. And 'Capitalist Democracy' is an oxymoron. It can't exist. The political system can never rise above polyarchy in a market capitalist state.* So I don't know what the Utopian country would look like, but the fullly democratic one most certainly would not be capitalist.

^You must be mistaken, because that's absurd. Which college professors? 'Influential' in what capacity? Ridiculous, there are dozens of better choices for 'Most influential book'. It's awful. I assume you've read it? How can you possibly endorse it? It's like watching a really bad movie; afterwards, you feel like you've just wasted a portion of your life that you'll never get back.

are you kidding? its one of the greatest presentations of philosophy ever. It is readable yet conveys Rand's point in a meaningful way. It's not supposed to be a literary masterpiece, she is simply using the novel format to demonstrate her philosophy. I'm sorry you were unimpressed, but it's a well respected work.

Best presentations pf philosophy ever? My ass. Read prolegomena, or The Republic, or the Nicomachean Ethics, or Locke's essay concerning human understanding, or a translation of L'etre et le neant, or some Heidegger. Hell, read a Shaw play, his characters do a better job of conveying personal philosophy.

I've read plenty of other philosophy, most of it dry and lacking in situational particularity. I really could care less if you like or dislike her work...it is well-respected, if not endorsed, by most scholars.

Right, ECFS... most scholars... you talked to all of them, I suppose. I've never heard any of my profs endorse it, but ok. If that's what you want to think. Anyways, my humble opinion is that most people's time would be far better spent doing almost anything but reading Ayn Rand. If you don't care about my opinion, then ignore it. And Anewmorning, the Republic REALLY does not fit with modern values, and this is why many people reject it.

it rejects any sembalence of society as anyone has ever known it. it would still be considered highly avant gaurde if it were authored today i bet... if you organized your society like that from square one, then perhaps the idea of unadulturated comminality could work... but i personally like family relationships... i guess that platos republic is a good idea in the same way that schoenbergs music is a good idea.

More than Mill's On Liberty, or Machiavelli's 'The Prince'? Clearly, political scholars are were not consulted. More influential than 'The I Ching', Tacitus' 'Germania' and 'Annals', and Plutarch's 'Lives'? Clearly historians weren't asked. More influential than the Aenid, the Illiad and the Oddysey? Apparently, classical scholars aren't involved in this, either. More influential than Hamlet, Don Quixote, and The Divine Comedy? Students of literature, you have been ignored. How about religious scholars? No, I don't see Aquinas' 'Summa Theologica', nor Martin Luther's 95 theses or 'On the Babylonian Captivity of the Church', nor the Koran. For the part of psychologists, Freud's 'Interpretation of dreams' is nowhere to be found. Who are these scholars on whom this study is founded, and what exactly are they scholars of?
