the meaning ends up being lost, because for most countries, it's a day specifically to remember the end of the first world war.

So of course in France, Britain, and Germany, all of whom lost absolutely obscene numbers of men, its a bit more of a serious holiday.

One of my best friends is over in Afghanistan right now, definitely going to be thinking of him and sending him a bunch of stuff. Mad thanks to all the vets out there.

this is the truck my brothers good friend got shot in while serving his time in iraq. he was one of our family favorites, he basically lived at my house and now he serving this great country of ours, anyone who does the same deserves respect

Here in the UK we call Veteran's Day "Remembrance Day."

I've noticed a lot in this thread is about people in Afghanistan. The day is supposed to remember everyone in conflicts past and present.

I personally am remembering my great great uncle who served in the first world war and then was in the home guard during the second world war.

was in a store today and helped out an older man with a navy hat on, thanked me and i hanked him. he lit up and talked to me for a few minutes. very respectable old dude

I am a student at Norwich University, a now more than half military school. Strange thing is, we don't get the day off or have any significant signs of remembrance on Veterans day. The same thing goes for Memorial day. The whole thing is a "wait, what?" moment to both civilians and the corps of cadets here.

Norma Shaver enlisted in the United States Army in 1943. Over 400,000 women served in the U.S. armed forces, mostly working as nurses and office assistants. In 1941, the Congress created the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), which was followed in 1942 by the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergence Services (or WAVES), which was attached to the Navy, and the Marine Corps Women’s Reserves. Women were not allowed to serve in combat roles, but they served an important role in filling positions behind the front lines, which freed up men to fight in battle.

yeah man, i go to CU and I have a bunch of friends at other colleges and universities that have it off but we dont. it deserves to have a day whether people will take the day to remember or not. I have the utmost respect for anyone who serves and I thank them for everything they do for us everyday. My dad just started another tour of duty, this time its afghanistan

it should be a day off, or at least an excused absence. Though I don't think many teachers would hold it against you for skipping class to attend a ceremony in honor of vets. Sometimes in life, there are simply things that are more important than school. Admins might not agree with that, but I'd rather be present and show respect to the people who allowed me to have the life I do than sit through an hour of math i'm never going to use.

just went to see the last post in Ieper, Belgium, basically ww1 frontline where each evening since the end of WW1 they blow the last post on bugles to remember all the fallen heroes of WW1...

deep stuff, lots of people and you could hear a pin drop when they were about to start...
definately a goosebump moment ...

it depends by state I believe.

I know back home in MA they had the day off at my home university, because it's a state school, and the state recognizes it, so they have to. Some private schools don't though.

If you're gonna have class they should at least change the subject material for the day or 1 lecture. That's what I'd do if i was a teacher. Take veteran's day and learn about veterans, their wars and their struggles instead of something else for a day.
