Thoughts about Movember- Could be controversial.

Hey guys, I'm just bringing this up, maybe playing devils advocate a bit. I'm all for supporting the cure for cancer so don't get me wrong.

Remember about a year ago when all the girls put their bra colour as their facebook status, and it was some big inside joke? It has happened again a few times this year as well with purses or something.

Anyway, when that happened there was a lot of talk on here about how stupid it is, and how women aren't actually doing anything by it. The line someone used that stuck in my mind was "Doing by not doing" so doing something easy to make yourself feel like you're supporting it.

I kinda feel like Movember is in the same boat. I mean, it is a lesser known form of cancer than breast cancer, so perhaps straight awareness is important with it.

What do you guys and girls think? I mean support of it seems to be fairly unanimous.

By the way, if this thread turns into a shitstorm I'm abandoning it.

these guys called it movember, and they are raising money for a good cause.

at least 80% of the people who participate in movember don't do anything in terms of donations or real useful awareness-building. movember is almost the exact same as the bra/ purse facebook statuses; only difference is there's a slight bit more donation effort through the movember organization.

i see it all around my school and its great. it deff raises awareness. changing facebook status is kind of childish because not everyone has/ uses it and its majority is 12 year olds.

Also your chances of ball cancer is higher if your a farmer, painter or a black male.
But lower chances if your a vegetarian or japanese.

double post, but i can't believe people actually donate to movember. how fuckin hard is it to grow a moustache. all you have to do is wait.
grow your pubes really long and braid them to your chest hair with beads. then ask me for a donation. anyone can grow a bloody moustache.

For most people, no shave november is simply about growing an awesome beard. The whole prostate cancer awareness thing is just kind of an excuse to do it.

I'm not saying that awareness isn't a motive for it, but the ratio of participation to donation is pretty high.

then why call it movember? just call it 'give me donations for doing nothing november'. if people are gonna donate just for someone growing a moustache, they'll donate for someone doing nothing too, cause it's basically the same thing.

not everyone growing a mustache is giving or helping the cause. they are just doing it because they think they're supposed to. which means that they are being only as helpful as the girls changing their facebook statuses. so i agree with timmi on some points. depends on why and what you're doing about the mustache.

im not taking part this month or in any of the stupid month themes. i think its juvenile and i'd rather just give some money.

I donated a little bit of money to a good cause, and now I have an excuse to grow a silly looking trucker-stache. There's nothing wrong with movember. I would never have donated to cancer research without this cause.

The breast cancer campaigns did raise awareness, actually, and so is movember. I don't really understand the hate. I guess people are bored.

every person knows about cancer, hence why things to raise awareness are stupid as hell. You raise awareness about unknown diseases. Not one that every celebrity and athlete openly talks about how great donating to it's funding is.

i think the whole point is to bring light in a fun way, to something terrible and heart wrenching...anyway to create awareness and raise money towards a disease is a good thing in my books...

THERE IS NO CURE FOR CANCER. only ways of lessening your chances of getting it.

we viciously need to stop looking for one, yes i'm aware prostate cancer is a huge ordeal, and that's why raising awareness is a big deal, but raising money to research is stupid as cancer(in general) already gets a huge amount of research money given to it each year.
There are far more important issues than prostate cancer that we should be raising both money and awareness for, however in a world consumed by cancer awareness we fail to address these concerns.

At my school the whole school participates in no shave November and somehow they donate money to prostate cancer research for each person that grows out their facial hair.

I think I've got a better grasp on it now. I didn't realize there was much emphasis on the raising money part, I thought it was just "goofy face for asscancer" month.

I can see the benefit of the sense of unity, I suppose.

My shop has already raised more than 600 dollars in a week of promoting it and 100 dollars separately myself. This raises money, bra color raised awareness if you will.
