Canon Camera's That Film!

Ok NS, so recently I have become interested in the Canon EOS t2i DSLR camera, and I want to buy, but I need to know if there is a cheaper Canon that also films as well as takes pictures. So can someone please give me a rundown of Canon camera's that film as well as take pictures that are cheaper than the t2i, but have about the same specs.

the rest arent very good... but if you really wanna save some scrilla, get the nikon d3100 maybe? its about 200$ cheaper and just doesent have some frame rates, and has 4 less megapixels

If youre planning on video though, T2i definitely. It won't take that much longer to save up the couple hundred extra.

It's 720i and 1080i, way different, way worse.

Get the T2i, its worth it dylan, trust me.

truth. i bought the T2i in spring and I love it. I film with it all the time instead of my HVX. I definitely recommend you buy it, you for sure won't be disappointed.

Are you more interested in video or stills? If you're more interested in video, I really suggest looking at the 60D, even though you were looking for something cheaper than the T2i. The 60D is a little more expensive but has some features that make it more ideal for filming. I would have bought it instead of the T2i if it had been out come out earlier.

A t2i or any VDSLR is not as simple as an actual video camera. for one, dont expect to just be able to hand it to your homies and have them film for you, without some camera knowledge they wont crank out great shots. AF is simply too slow to use, so you have to be good at focusing on the fly, or stop down to get a deeper DoF. Stabilization (tripod, glidecam, etc) is also essential because the camera is really too light to hold very steady handheld. your tripod CAN double as a ghetto-glidecam, but be prepared for those expenses.

finally your camera is only as good as the glass in front of it, so be prepared to shell out for some nice primes or an expensive fixed aperture zoom. however some of that cost can be reduced by hunting for old pentax, nikon, or canon glass on ebay and getting an adapter ring for around 10 bucks. just stay away from anything that needs glass in an adapter (aka Canon FD mount, and i believe some nikon mounts as well).


im not trying to say the t2i or similar camera is wrong for you, just make sure you understand the limitations before you drop 1k plus on a setup.

lot of good points here.

the T2i is a great camera, but you'll have to put time into learning how to use it and money into putting together a solid setup.

Yes, I have dont my research. I do want the t2i, but it's the money that is the problem. Right now, the Nikon D1300 seems to have the best price.

no, it's 1080p and 720p. i just got that off the b&h website though, so i guess it could be wrong. but the frame rates are so bad that it's not worth it.

and to OP, that Nikon is ok, but if you're going to be filming skiing you might want to go with the T2i since the Nikon doesn't shoot at 720p60p. not essential, but pretty important to a lot of people

keep in mind that in the scheme of a $1000 plus setup, does the less than $300 difference really matter? especially for the sake of having the camera that does what you want. maybe 60p isnt important to you, but its pretty much essential when it comes to slow motion.

you can't buy a t2i kit and be set to make edits. you just won't be able to do that.

Because:
a. kit lens is shit (IMO) ($$$)
b. no stablization/support ($$$)
c. shit audio ($$)
d. extra batterys/cards ($)

adds up, you cant just have 900 bucks and get a t2i kit and be rollin.

kid posted a thread looking for a camera cheaper than the t2i. Pretty sure he doesn't care about all that.

You can probably make a better edit with a t2i than a gopro, and kids do that all the time.

Yep, and I have decided to purchase a Nikon D5000 with the kit lense (used) for $418. I will build my own glide - cam if needed.

if your thinking that i meant slow motion by that? i didnt, i meant the footage may look a bit choppy with a slow shutter just because of the fast paced motion, so he may want to crank up the shutter

Kit lens have VC so......yeah you can shoot handheld just fine (still a small/light body though). It will look better than some shitty ass gopro edit. He can always build his kit up in the future as well.
