Lots of people get custom footbeds in their boots to support their arches. Dr Scholl's does essentially the same thing, so he'd love you for it - just make sure they fit in the liner. It might be a better choice to take him to a ski shot and surprise him by getting him sized into a footbeds, just because those are designed for ski boots. :)
i feel like dr.scholls might help but it wouldn't be as good as footbeds. the dr,scholls stuff is made to fit a lot of peoples feet whereas a custom footbed is made for one persons feet.
One side of me thinks that they could potentially mess up the function of the boot. Since that doesn't seem likely, I would say go for it. If it makes your feet feel better than who can say anything different?
Putting a Dr Scholls in your ski boot amounts to a horrible idea. If you put soft mush under your foot, your foot will be able to move and shift around inside the ski boot. This is what we call shearing and it leads to friction, which can lead to a lot of discomfort in a ski boot (blisters, toe bang, shin bang, sloppy fit).
What your foot needs is good structure, a good foundation to stand upon when inside a ski boot. He will be way happier with that than with Dr. Scholls.
I knew he did too, cause if I'm not mistaken he's answered this question a few times. And he's exactly correct, one of my friends did this, I said it was a bad idea before he put his boots on, he ended up with some crazy blisters...not a good time, I wouldn't recommend it at all.
go to a shop and get a set of superfeet trim to fit footbeds, should run you anywhere from $30-$50 depending on the shops prices. They have different models with different arches and fits. Otherwise, go full custom and get into a set of conformables.
