I don't think its a bad idea. It would cut down on people going "this" or something just to let you know that they agree with what you said.

seriously though I don't think we need one. It's not a big issue to quote someone and be like "i agree" NS has way more to deal with before a like button.

I think an "add to my threads" button could be more useful. Personally I don't find it hard to remember threads without posting "my threads" in it, but a lot of people do.

Having simply a Like button would mean that instead of liking the best and most thought-out contributions, people would tend to like "fun" posts more, which these days tend to be spent memes and this would lead to people posting more and more memes fishing for Likes and that's the fastest way down shitcreek if I've ever seen one.

it should not say "like", but something else

so essentially it would serve the same purpose but not be so facebooky. even just a little thumbs up button would be good.

it would also cut down on people posting "this" or quoting people to say "haha" or dumb shit like that

i like this idea very much.

There has been a lot of research on this, social graphing on the internet is not easy, For video I certainly believe that a 'like' button is a step up from a 1 - 10 star ranking system, because one persons '8 stars' varies to the next person. Liking something would tend to be a more accurate way to graph peoples opinions.

I feel that facebook made it up though, and on other sites it would probably be too facebooky. except youtube... on there it's fine. hell, I would probably use it if NS adopted a like button. until then I will keep on hating with my flawed logic.

Discrete terminology doesn't matter. Facebook certainly did not invent voting. Call it whatever, + (plus) or - (minus), thumbs up or thumbs down, like or dislike, good or bad, up or down etc etc.

In the end newschoolers has never been a fast adopter of innovative social graphing/landscaping approaches. we still use a forum, all updates are formatted as full blog posts (making it difficult to publish short, site wide messages) and the news posts are basically lists of images.... its a cool website and the users are used to it, but its not the most intuitive way to display information.usability wise there are also a lot of problems. There is a lot of room for improvement.

yup. my threads button would make for a lot less clutter. But I don't think we should get a like button.. people should just know better than to say "this" without following up with some contribution like "this, and also..."

I think a "like" feature in the video and picture sections would be a more effective way to rate. Thats based on the way I usually rate photos and videos..10 or no rating. Generally speaking Im sure alot of people on here follow the same.

Like button in the forums wpuld be every quippers slow ascent on the treadmill to self fullfillment. id avoid it.
