Help me pick out a camera

First off, yes i read the sticky haha, well im not sure how much money i could get , but a general price range i set for mysef is from 800-1350 ..right now i have a jvc , don't know the mdel off the top of my head, its not hd just a basic (300$) camera, I made a custom handle for it, and made a pole mount for it. and as far as editing I was using adobe premiere elements 8, (because i have windows seven anbd that seems to be the best), ive messed around with it a lot, I'm not an expert, but I have set aside abunch of time to learn and expand my knowledge, I would use the camera pretty much just for skiing and skateboarding, but I also want to get a camera that I could eventualy get a water housing for to film surfing. As far as filming style goes I like diversity so a lot of the stuff i film is both on a tripod and a follow cam, ....at first i was thinking about getting a gl2, then i was leaning towards a gl1 (to save a little money), and then i reallised that there's a plethora of cameras that might be better, maybe even a dslr, I'm very familiar with slr's (aperature, depth of field, all that good stuff) but i know nothing about dslr's , and maybe that would be the way to go for me ....some input would be awsome
