Canadian Snow Crisis?

So I live in western BC in the Kootenays. None of the resorts have snow. Lake Louise just opened one run and the base is only man made. Its pretty late in the year to not have any snow yet. Whis is doin just fine at the higher elevations. How are your guys resorts doing?

Terrible. Sunshine doesn't have nearly as much snow as it did last year at this time. The La nina weather pattern makes for a slightly warmer winter with more precipitation which means all the good snow will fall a little later in the season. Just have to be patient.

i live in the okanogan, we have some snow

apex - 9 cm base

big white - 15 cm base

silverstar 15 cm base.

this week last year, big white was open.

almost right. la nina is a cooler, wetter pattern.

anyways this just means that the overall winter will follow this patern. it does not mean everything will happen a certain way when we expect it to. its early fucking november chill the fuck out

sun peaks has a 30 cm base but thats at the top.

was sooooo looking forward to shredding sunshine but its really not looking hopeful at all.

This. Skiing in November at SSV/LL usually sucks anyway (although there have been some good starts in the last 5 years I admit). This November is not going to break last year's record at Whistler though.

No one can say that the first week in november is early in the year. If you're even from BC you would know that in the mountains it usually snows in september at least once or twice. Kimberley, my local hill, has 0 snow on it. But the weather pattern prob makes up for some of that.

Revelstoke has a 50cm base at summit, 15cm at the top of the gondola. Not looking amazing, and there's no decent snow forecast in the next two weeks either. I'm expecting it to perk up though, it just looks like it's going to be a slow start. We've had a lot of rain, it just needs to get a bit colder so it can snow and settle at lower elevations.

It snowed a bunch in the rockies around Banff in September and early October. It then got warm and melted, snowed again, got warm again and here we are. It's not a big deal, it never really snows much until November in most of BC/AB anyway.

well since whistler is at a lower elevation than sunshine or louise your assumption that the higher the elevation the more the snow is a little off. It is coming, its only the start of november and every year is different. We are to north and to east out here to be getting the snow right now, but that will change very soon. very very soon. and one run is better than no run my friend.

Both Sunshine and Louise operate in a National Park so there has to be a certain amount of settled snow before the cats/sleds can drive on the slopes. They also need time after the snow to do the cat/boot packing work to get the hill ready to open. I think it's 50cm settled at Sunshine since they do not have much snowmaking.

Taken straight from the Whistler facebook page, all you have to do is look at the webcams to see they have quite a bit of snow higher up!

Also worth noting that last year the Kootenays had an absurd amount of snow early season. Whitewater opened all their terrain on opening terrain. This winter is just like most winters as far as early season snow goes - you can't go getting yourself all depressed just because its not as good as it was last year.

its ok, its snowing again at sun peaks, and its the first time it has snowed down to the village I think,

im not very good with predicting the weather and knowing cycles and stuff but apparently but 98-99 season was a La Nina year and saw the most snowfall ever recorded at whistler

figures from sun peaks from that year are similar to whats going on this year i guess, november and december saw about 50-60 cm each then was followed by 200-250cm a month for the rest of the season

I can live with a shit early season for that kinda of snow

we make due of the preseason snow we have at whitewater. bout 2 feet or so i think. we got a good jib line going till we can hit pillow lines in a few weeks.

also im headin up to whitewater tomorrow to check out the lifts for class. were gonna take the summit chair up and check out the top to see how much snow and the stations and all that stuff. give ya an update on how were lookin up there tomorrow.
