ok so i am sitting here taking a dump thinking to my self where would i want to ski? if i could go anywhere in the world in ski it would probably be Austria. where would you guys go?
I used to live and work in Japan. I lost my Alien Registration Card, and when I was emigrating the country I was detained and questioned for a while. I was more or less forced to sign a bunch of contracts I couldn't read (because they were in kanji) which I learned afterwards was actually me agreeing I'd never go to Japan ever again.
I did file a police report saying my wallet and card were stolen but apparently it never made it into the system. Apparently it's a pretty big security issue to cards floating around as they can use them to illegally smuggle people into the country, or let people work illegally.
This all happened about 24 hours after I was kidnapped in Vietnam. I was kidnapped in Hanoi on my way to the airport to fly to Japan where I was catching a flight back home to Canada the next day. Pretty crazy 48 hour period.
I tried talking with the Japanese embassy here in Canada on the phone, and they said it's probably all good and I can probably get in the country. But, they had no idea how to check for certain, or how to find out what I signed actually was, or how it is stored and accessed. So, if I flew into Japan, I might be turned away at the border, or I might not. I'm not going to spend +$1000 on a flight and be turned away. Totally bogus.
Same. I am going to be scratching my head for a long time after that description.
To maximumsushi. Did a black cat cross your path when you were walking under a ladder while breaking a mirror over your head? That has to be the unluckiest thing I have ever heard. No offense.
Yeah, it's a pretty ridiculous story. A lot happened in a 48 hour period. We were very unlucky when trying to leave Hanoi. The woman we paid to book our plane tickets (you can't just buy tickets online in Vietnam) forgot to book the tickets right away, the plane sold out and we were almost stranded in Vietnam unable to make our flight from Japan. We eventually did find another flight which would put us in Japan in time to make our Canada flight. We had very little money left at this point in time, so the extra $50 per ticket was a big deal.
Then the next morning the friend I was traveling with was robbed by a vietnamese mafia dude holding a butcher cleaver to his throat.
Then the next day we stayed at a hotel that was run by the mafia (unknown to us at that time) and they jacked my bag which had our plane tickets in there. When we figured out the hotel had actually stolen our bags, we tried to get them back. We ended up in a cab, with a bunch of Vietnamese gangsters with knives. We spent a few hours in the car parked in a very sketchy area of Hanoi, complete with burnt out and bombed factories and absolutely no people around. We were unable to go anywhere, and were pretty freaked out. Eventually the lead gangster got a phone call, stepped out of the car, and did some shouting. Then he got back in and they drove us to the airport. My bag was in an aircraft hanger along with 100s of other stolen bags. The tickets were still in there, and they let us go.
There's a lot more to it, including a pretty hellish morning before even getting banned from Japan. 40 degree heat, lugging a gigantic broken suitcase through the streets of Japan to the train station because I didn't have enough money even for a subway ticket. I almost didn't make my flight because spent so much time being detained. I had to sprint down a huge ramp to the gate. I didn't tie my shoes after going through security, and one came off. I guess you can probably imagine what happened. I flew through the air and ate total shit. Terrible carpet burn all over my face. Awesome. I did make my flight though.
I went back to Asia two years later, and was supposed to work in China. I had an even worse experience that time over the course of a week including $1350 stolen from me by a crooked real estate agent, stolen ipod, and shiesty HR practices at my future employer which meant my job essentially evaporated. To top it off, my girlfriend broke up with me over skype. Bummer.
I did travel back to Hanoi, Vietnam, on that trip after traveling through China and Laos. I had a much better time there the second time.
Yeah, I went Cat skiing in that area last season, southern Kooteneys. Unbelievable. Not the deepest day I had last season, but unbelievably cool stuff to ski.
