well my evo and s4 was/is awd so while I can slide its not full blown drifting- I can buy a stasis motorsports diff and it wil be 81% rear bias but still wouldnt be allowed to compete in any events

I wouldn't say I actually know how to drift properly, and I've never even tried in a rwd car, but I've slid my younger brother's STI around in parking lots before and it's fun as hell haha.

I could in my pontiac fiero but I sold that shit to get my explorer which is slightly hard to get sideways but definitely do able. Mainly in the snow or on an off road dirt course that we set up.

When I was 14 I used to take an old civic hatch we got for 250$ and "drift" up my long ass gravel driveway. I could link turns pretty good around the s shaped section though I had only a slight idea of what I was doing. After being in a few accidents in my friend's cars I got scared and can't anymore.

I know I'm time traveling here back to an old thread, but I'd rather bump this then make a whole new thread about drifting.

Me and my buddy right now are actually looking to buy our first drifting car. I know a little bit about engines and I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but my friend is really good with just anything motors, so we should be able to handle the work that our car is going to give us. We're good friends with a few mechanics in our area and they always help us out with our own cars, so they'd be more than willing to help us get a drift car together too.

First we've been looking at cars, we're on a really low budget, but we expect this project to possibly take a couple years and we both work all the time so more money should be available. We've been looking around at the typical, Nissan 300sx, 240sx, and if we could find one cheap we'd even consider say, an older bmw 325 or something. If anyone has any other good first drifting cars, let me know your thoughts and personal experiences.

300sx's can get a little pricey but I saw that a local junkyard had a running one that the interior was destroyed on, but the body and engine were in good shape. It didn't mention the frame, but I'll have to go scope it out for rust and such. Is this a terrible idea? We'd be able to do a lot of restoring work but maybe it's not even worth it so let me know if anyone's done anything like this either.

When I was younger I used to plink about in the drift scene and I have some advice for you.  Firstly, dont take this the wrong way, but it is nearly impossible to compete, even at an amateur level, without serious coin.  Motorsports are one of the most effective ways to turn money into noise.  For instance, racing always results in breaking things, usually expensive things, and drifting in particular is really hard on cars.  Just think what you're asking the car to do.  Go flat out for a period of time, violently jerking around, with limited airflow to cool the engine.  You will crash, repeatedly, that's part of it.  If you're lucky it will be cosmetic damage, but eventually you're going to ding up something important, bend a suspension component, rip off your intercooler, or blow your engine.  This is part of it too.  Also, tires are never as cheap as you think they will be and they add up super fast, even if you have some sort of hookup and are driving on used tires. 

Now, if you are committed and understand this my advice would be to pick up an old s13 240sx and use that as your base car.  They are popular in the drift scene for a reason and have a large availability of parts.  Dropping in a SR20 redtop is pretty cheap now (I think around 2g) and with minor tuning and obvious bolt ons allow you to smoke em.  You don't need the most powerful car out there to have fun and learn, look at the old AE86 guys making use of their sub 100hp engines.  As time goes on and you get more money you can always upgrade, and if this is a race specific car stripping it down and reducing the weight will make a big difference too. 

Once your car is suitable, or even as you're building it, connect with the local scene and make an effort to go out to events to meet guys, gain connections and learn.  You're going to want a front mount intercooler, perhaps you will meet the cheapest guy who will weld it up for you here etc.  Most car clubs are pretty welcoming too if they think you're serious and will give advice on places to practice.  Take it, you need lots of practice.  When you think you're ready, you're not.  Practice more.  On that note, make sure you're being smart about it.  We were lucky here, the local track allowed guys to practice one night a week in the infield.  It was a good safe place for people to learn and made a huge difference.  Don't be the tool ripping around in the walmart parking lot as people are walking out and don't think you're too fast and too furious and try this on the street. 

Thanks a ton for all the help man. Ya I figure it's going to be a real expensive hobby to get into. When I said we're really on a budget, I just mean that right now, we don't have unlimited funds to buy a starting car. I mean either of us don't really have too many other expenses to cover, so most of the money that we bring in can go towards our car, whether it's tires or a blown engine or really anything, in the future we should be able to cover it. I just didn't want to spend a TON of money right up front, that's all.

Really I don't expect to become an amateur or anything. I just love cars and drifting seems like a great hobby to pick up. I'm just going to be drifting for the fun of drifting, and getting out there and doing some competitions with people that enjoy doing the same thing as me. Don't get me wrong I'm going to take it seriously, but not too seriously yet. If in the future it leads to something more serious then I'll gladly put everything I have into it. I mean, no one really starts skiing to become a professional skier but if it leads to that, that's awesome then. I'm going to check out some Nissan's on Monday so I'll let you know how that goes.
