Flatspin question?

okay so i learned how to backflip the other day, and i wanna at least try a flatspin. but when i throw one into the foam pit, it always turns into a underflip, how do i correct it? thanks +K

alright so i hope this makes sense im gonna try to explain it. when you are going off, start it off as a gainer or backflip but once you start it and start going backwards drop your left shoulder and look over it. you should still try to arch your back at first like a gainer/backflip, and that will help you avoid going into an underflip. i had trouble with it first too, but it helps if you try what i said. hope that helps bro.

yeah dude youre just not dropping your left shoulder back enough. just drop that more and look over it and youll be good

I'm no pro, but the few times I was able to get this into a foam pit, was when I started with my back to the pit and just tried to arch my back and look over my left shoulder.  You are trying to gainer it off a tramp which is really hard.  I tried a lot this summer and never got it.  Try just setting up a big resi block or just throw it off of that horse that you did the hand plant off of.  The first couple of times, try to keep your arms open.  That should keep it from turning into a cork 7. 

That gym is sick by the way.  I want that in my area.  The place I go just has a mini tramp that you can set up to jump into the pit.  I like that funky elevated tramp thing they have at yours.  Way more bounce.  Any Denver NSers know if their is one of those around here?

yea but i'm better at gainers, i can dub gainer easier than i can dub backflip into that pit

try thinking about it more like a lincoln loop with a spin, especially if you're trying to go flat not rodeo.  commit your body to the right (right side flip) and spin to the left (look over your left shoulder while flipping to the right).  If you're doing underflips you're flipping to the LEFT and spinning to the left.  When I'm doing flatspins I don't set them like backflips at all, but when i do rodeo, i set back a little more.  I dunno if that helps.

yea i'll have to try this all on Friday and get a video. but it seems like it'd be more of a misty flip if i throw it like that?

also try grabbing mute or critical with your right hand.  helps you get your shoulders in the right position.  Japan is a little harder I think, but still a relatively easy grab for flatspins

Yeah, I saw that and it was definitely impressive.  What I'm saying is that it seems easier to flatspin when you are not in a tuck.  When you gainer, you get into a tuck from the start and I think that makes it harder to set the flatspin rotation.  Try to stand on that hand plant horse with your back facing the pit and try to lay out a back into the pit from there.  Once you have that, throw it over one shoulder or the other with your arms open; no grab.  What have you got to lose by trying it?  If it doesn't work give me 0/10.

thats pretty normal that you feel like your misty flipping, and you might be cause they're really close.  The main difference in my head when I think about it is with a misty flip you throw your right shoulder forward, with a flat spin I flip to the side and throw my left shoulder back.  I watched that vid above and you're just setting too much like a backflip.

or rodeo, but yeah, same thing.  once you get one you'll understand how to keep them flat

would it be still be flat if you looked over your right shoulder insted of your left? i spin left and looking over the left shoulder feels super awk. but looking over my right feels way more natural.

I think you should try learning a rodeo 5 first, what you are doing is no where near the flatspin arena.  You're doing a backflip with a quick 180 at the end.  Flat spin 5 is like a 540 that you do while sitting in a reclining chair, if that makes sense.

This is the only video I can find of just a flat 5.  Watch how my feet don't go over my head (or else it would be rodeo), and I set the 5 and then keep it going by looking around my shoulder.  If this makes sense: with rodeo you think of going inverted and then spinning too, and with flats you think of spinning, and then trying to go inverted.

I learned in this order:  540/backflip, rodeo 5, flat 5

Also, learn it with a safety or japan grab.  Those should feel very natural and will help you keep yourself together.  If they don't, you might be doing something wrong.  I grabbed my first rodeo 5 and I think that helped me a lot.

use your hands to spin towards left, and your upper body do kind of sideflip towards right

it's prob been said already but try throwing your right hand behind you to your left leg like your grabbing japan. than just drop that left sholder and you'll be golden.
