So instead of buying a new helmet I've been thinking about just painting my old one. Anyone done this and have any tips or know if it will even turn out well? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
get a pair of rubber gloves from like home depot, get some sand paper and sand it down to get rid of the oil on it, and other shit. so wear gloves cause if you dont you will be defeting (sp) the purpose. after you sand it down, spray paint it all white, let that dry and then you can put a clear coat on it, its up to you. then you spray paint it the color you want, let that dry, put another coat on , let that dry and then once more. after that dries put another clear coat on. you have to do this or else it will start to come off. i have never done it with helmets. but i used to do xbox controllers for friends.
Oops, sorry, im on phone: use tape to cover up anything you dont want to be painted(the ear flaps, the straps, metal studs, brand logo's etc). sand the helmet as much as possible, you need to do it more than you think. Put a layer of primer on, let it dry. Put a layer of whatever color you want, let it dry. Now get some matte clear coat and spray it down one final time. Good luck!
I didn't want my helmet shiny, i wanted a matte look, so i didnt put on the clear coat. i taped over the ear flaps and around the edge of the helmet, then sanded it down, and then used Krylon Fusion and it worked great, but make sure you spray a foot away from the helmet otherwise the paint will start to run. the only problem was that without the clear coat it scratches fairly easy
its a good cost saving idea, it will definatly void the warrenty and liability. But anyways, yea ive seen a lota cool painted helmets as long as you take your time and are patient. I cannot stress it enough, you need multiple clear coats, this will reduce chipping. I reccomend 3 clear coats. Good luck, post pics when your done.
