Setting Up a New Mac

What programs are good to put onto a new mac?
Are their any programs that are pretty much a must get?
Any tricks to macs most people wouldn't know?
Anything that should be avoided doing?
Any must knows before starting?

Disclaimer, Searchbarred couldn't find anything that was a good guide.

i did have a torrented version of photoshop but once i got to school it was just easier to get a legit version, and for only $300 why not

VLC is a must.  A few weeks ago I downloaded AutoCAD for Mac for free because I have a student email and I assume you do too.  It's free for like 3 years. You can also download the beta for Facetime for Mac so if you have friends with an iPhone 4 you can facetime with them.

They make 170HP, 4cylinder cars that would destroy my v8 truck in any kind of race. Why? because my truck's engine is powering a bulky truck around with it, while basically everything in the car is designed to use its power more efficiently. You can kind of compare this to computers (from what I understand windows slows down a computer a great deal more than osx. correct me if I'm wrong)

I have used both though and found no useful benefits of a more powerful HP laptop over my macbook. I'm not saying that they are superior to PC's by any means, but look around and see all the people using macs. Macs aren't just for art kids anymore, science students, even engineering and business students are using them now (although often using microsoft software when they have too). Apple can't sell that many computers on good marketing alone, they obviously are getting the job done.

I picked up one of the new Consumer Report's and Mac held basically the top 3+ spots in all the categories it was in.  Microsoft computers still own the market overall but they sell tons of 350$ computers to people at Wal Mart and whatnot that don't know any better.  I think the study I saw said Apple sells 90% of all computers over 1000$.  Just what I read though, take it as you will.

maybe if you're talking about a PC it's those prices. There's a reason why the components in macs aren't as upgraded as in PC's and cost much more. They dont' need 8gb of RAM to run perfect all the time.

I'm getting a 13" macbook pro on Monday, but what computer would be better? I had an IBM but it was pretty hopeless.

I'm not sure if anyone's asked this yet, but what are you actually going to be using it for? It's hard to say what suits you without having some idea of the uses its going to be put to

I really wish I had gotten the 15" just for screen space at school. It's so much nicer when I plug in to the big screen at home.

13" is not bad, but you pretty much can't set stuff up side by side.

okay great. then instead of buying a new mbp in a couple weeks, you can just point me to a skinny, durable laptop with all those specs, good battery life, and a warranty, for around a grand. what a relief i found a computer pro just in time

My economics teacher is saying right now that the reason people buy Apple is for the logo on the laptop and that Apple is less virus prone because writers of viruses go after PC's because they have 97% of the market and not 3%.  I'm paraphrasing but that's what he's saying.  Funny thing is last week I did my online post about MAC-PC and the real market share numbers and he's a bit off.

a lot of people probably do buy because of the brand but in all honesty macbooks really do run more smoothly than other laptops.

buuuuump it on up. similar situation, i have used dell all my life and got tired of reformatting what seemed like yearly. tell me some tricks as well as necessary programs (not already listed)! are there any better torrent hosters for mac? i always used tpb on pc, what do you use?

UnRarX: Expands .rar files.
VLC: Multimedia players that plays many different files.
Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop
Microsoft Office
Google Chrome

Command F: Type in key words and it finds them for you on a webpage.
Control Option Command 8: Inverts colours.
Shift Command 3: Screen shot.
Shift Command 4: Screen shot specific area.

Set your trackpad to tap, my click is basically broken and it's hard to drag things now cause I use to click it so hard.
Try not to drain your battery, if it says using reserved battery power get your charger before it shuts off. My battery is now basically useless and it will last a full 3 minutes off a charger.
Lastly be careful with it. Mine has a dent next to the apple, and I opened my screen to hard one time and now there is an annoying screen problem.
