Snowboarders -> Skiers

Anyone else noticing a lot more snowboarders switching to skiing these days? Maybe not, but in my experiences with friends and such, I've been noticing more than normal amounts of people switching to skiing. I wonder why this is happening?...maybe skiing is getting more popular via XGames or Dew Tour, JOI? I'm not really sure, what do you guys think?

Tons of threads on this, but people want to try new shit.

Typically, most of them are weekend riders who barely go up in the season. It's fine I guess, more support to our industry.

None of my snowboarder buddies switched but I think skiing is for sure on the way up. 6-7 years ago you could go to Bear and see basically no skiers in the park and go to Mt High and see absolutely none. Now there are tons at Mammoth a lot at Bear and even the occasional person at Mt High. I'm excited for this season. Even just 2 seasons ago you would be lucky to see one other park skier even if you rode all day at Mt High. Last season I would regularly see at least 2 or 3.

IDK about around the world but at least in SoCal I think the Gatorade Freeflow tour is really helping. Was up on the day of the comp last season and a lot of snowboarders on the lift were like "oh hey you ski, there were some dudes doing some gnarley shit out there today".

Its sort of a big deal because most of the comps we get down here are things like volcom peanut butter rail jam that are snowboarders only. That paired with a lack of skiers in the park, a lot of snowboarders who never really get up to Mammoth or Tahoe haven't seen much park skiing.

I seriously didn't know park skiing existed till I saw THall doing some crazy shit on redbull's website. Back in Jr. High/early Highschool I switched to snowboarding for a while cause I had never seen a pair of twin tips and thought park skiing was impossible.

this is just a thought but i think its because snowboarding was originaly marketed for that general cruzing jibbing flow around the mountain and i hate to use the term, "extreme" sports, so someones first exposure to it would likely leave them believing that to be its sole purpose. skiing has been around for a far greater amount of time so people in general just see it used for groomers and powder. now with events like x games being widely televised people who previously though this general type of sport was confined to snowboard are starting to see skiing as a more diverse form of snow sport. just my .02

this, basically more publicity the more skiers you will see. It's beginning to be the cool thing to do. even at my tiny 250ft vertical ski hill ive seen a giant shift in park skier to snowboarder ratio. there are now more freeskiers than snowboarders. it's pretty sick.

I was once asked "ian why do you ski?" I then hit them in the face with my white glove. walked away then came back with 3 solid 9's i said three words to him "this is why" Hence this incident he started skiing.

I am a snowboarder and I will answer why I want to ski park.

1.Skiing on rails is the sickest thing ever. You can move each leg individually, making your jibbing options virtually endless. Pretzeling is a lot more feasable, because you have 4 edges to work with to grip the rail. Obviously it's still do-able but a lot more difficult. There is just a bigger variety of things you can do on a rail than us snowboarders.

2.When landing a trick, skiers have the option to land a little bit sideways and shifty out. Snowboarders, especially while jumping, have to land with their board parallel to the run, or they are fucked. They will either end up slipping out or catching an edge.

3. Watching How We Livin, or Refresh last year really gave me a broader view of the freeskiing sport. I love watching snowboard videos, but ski movies are a completely different level.

4. More of the mountain is accessable. Hiking is all good fun, but honestly, when I drop in on Park Lane jumps I have to drop in higher because I am 100 lbs and the fact that I am on a board. It is much easier for skiers to gain speed and send it off a jump, and they can rotate much quicker and with a lot more ease. I always get snaked by skiers on jump lines just because they have the option to drop in lower. Then you get to the whole hiking situation being easy, and unstrapping and restrapping, and blah blah blah, with snowboarding. 

5. Freeskiing is progressing at a ridiculous rate. I think it's more that snowboarders are switching BACK to skiing, because most kids start as skiing and eventually they might switch to snowboarding. I, myself, have never skied, but have always wanted to. I am definitely going to give skiing a shot this year, but I am not giving up boarding.

I could go on, but I am done. I have to get up early... to go shred.

at my hill its mostly skiers in the park and only 2 or 3 of the boarders are good compared to about 20 skiers.  we run it

I'm a snowboarder and I also taught myself how to ski this past season. I got bored with snowboarding, to be honest.

I feel like snowboarding is your partying days, where you immature, naked and wild. Whilst skiing is your mature days, where you smoke tobacco out of pipes, wear satin robes and celebrate holidays sober.

(I switched back to skiing as major snowsport 5 years ago but still snowboard sometimes)

I agreed on almost everything except that

- you do not gain speed easier with skis than snowboard. Maybe you feel more confident so you go "more straight" and it's seems like but no. (physics!)
- it is harder to set a rotation on skis than on a snowboard (much more weight underfeet).
- hiking with ski boots while carrying your skis is also harder than hiking with a snowboard.

Do you remember Shane in High Life (if I m not mistaking). He said he had been jealous with all these snowboarders flying down the mountain and was stoked to finally beeing "Snowboarding on skis".

Fat Skis > Snowboard > Skis

This is very true. In the park there is usually 1good snowboarder to about 4 good skiers.

That is good to see.  In socal, Mt. Baldy has always had plenty of skiers, it is a quality mountain with really fun terrain, when they get snow.

Mammoth has always had a big crowd of skiers on the upper mountain.

I accidentally switched those I meant to say yeah it is easier to hike for a snowboarder, but when youre in park, it really doesnt matter - you dont even have to take off your skis. I am little and it is harder for me to gain speed so i have to drop higher. Believe me, I don't have an issue pointing it.

 Skiers can do an iceskating motion moving their feet individually to get their momentum started, and then use their poles to give them an extra push. So they can drop lower.

And what snowboarders do you know that are throwing 14s and 16s... rotating is WAY easier on skis.

^ Both 14 and 16 has been done on a snowboard.
And I wasn't really thinking about big spins cause most people don't throw them. I was more thinking about setting the rotation (when you start it). It is easier to get 360 and more on a snowbard (imo). But then I don't know about keeping the rotation up to 10 or more.

Maybe skiers can drop lower. I don't know. I was just trying to point out that in my case I find rotating easier on a snowboard and never noticed big speed difference. But maybe you should try skiing and tell me back.

i accually have noticed alot of my friends switching back to skiing
my brother accually wants to switch and hes been snowboarding for like 12 years and decided that skiing jsut seems cooler

i personally just switched from snowboarding to skiing mid-last season after a good 11-12 seasons snowboarding, and its just the thought of being able to try something new. after i switched half of my snowboarder buddies saw me and immediately went out to find a pair of skis to try it

Snowboarding was a 90s and 2000s intermezzo to tell skiers how...gay their sport had become. It was like a wake up call.

Now, with skiing again on the front row of progression and innovation, snowboarding has become obsolete.

Not hating on snowboarders, though. Without them, we would have gaper sessions 365 days a year.

but what i meant is that like what snowboarder do you know that could throw 14s and 16s in a slopestyle comp. there are several skiers who can do a 14 and isn't Schiller the only one who has done a 16 in a comp? correct me if I am wrong... cuz I honestly dont know if anyone else has in a comp.

but yeah, i should try skiing and see if all my reasons to switch are legit haha

used to be the other way around for me, but now i'm noticing a difference. its such a young sport, (modern) freeskiing didn't even really exist until like 15 years ago. skiing is rad, stoked that i didn't switch to snowboarding when all my friends did when i was little

-yeah thats why skiers get to hit a rail 3 times before a snowboarder can because they have to strap in and everything. and even if you were talking about hiking on real mountains with real skiing, hiking with boots isnt so bad. you can use them to dig in to ice and shit. and carrying your skis isnt hard unless youre a complete gaper. also you can use your poles as walking sticks.

i dont hate snowboarding, just pointing out how stupid your points were

At the beginning of last season, I converted my boarder friend to skiing. He is Noe as good on skis as he was on a board. It was pretty awesome.

I immediately thought of you when I saw this thread.


On a related note. I'm a snowboarder, have been for 8 or so years. But just last season, I picked up my first pair of skis. I don't plan on switching to skiing, but just as something fun to do on crappy days. I think it's fun starting over at the beginning again. It's a new challenge. I suggest that people who have been skiers their entire lives, go pick up a cheap snowboard setup, or borrow your friends, and just have a fun day every once in a while.

a- If you drop from point A you'll get velocity V at point B whatever you're riding on. Only weight and friction matter and both are almost the same in this case. You don't have to be a physics expert to know that.

- If you guys are talking about skating moves and pole plant it's fucking obvious that you can't pole plant to gain speed on a snowboard..

- I did not say it was hard but harder. Of course I was talking about walking a little bit more than 25 m to hit a flat rail. Not hating on flat rails but just pointing out how childish our argument is.

In the past 2 years of ski season, around 10 snowboarders have switched to skiing. It's pretty awesome that everyone is starting to think skiing is the cool thing to do again, not to mention it's way more fun.
