Replying to Cost for a new clutch?

My 2000 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Wagon 4D needs a new clutch. I brought it into a shop that does transmissions, and the estimate seemed really high. First off, how much should labor cost for putting in a new clutch be? This place was going to charge me $450 for the labor. Seems pretty high but maybe it's not. Also, the clutch straight from Subaru is going to run me roughly $700 because the lady at Subaru said that the parts no longer come in a kit and would have to be purchased individually. So does anyone know of an after market clutch that would be less expensive that would work in this car? How's Excedy? My friend says their clutches are really good/dependable but that's just one opinion.
