Cost for a new clutch?

My 2000 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Wagon 4D needs a new clutch. I brought it into a shop that does transmissions, and the estimate seemed really high. First off, how much should labor cost for putting in a new clutch be? This place was going to charge me $450 for the labor. Seems pretty high but maybe it's not. Also, the clutch straight from Subaru is going to run me roughly $700 because the lady at Subaru said that the parts no longer come in a kit and would have to be purchased individually. So does anyone know of an after market clutch that would be less expensive that would work in this car? How's Excedy? My friend says their clutches are really good/dependable but that's just one opinion.

That seems roughly about right, 1200 for a new clutch is on the expensive side, but you'll be hard pressed to find a new clutch and labour for under 800 I believe.

new clutch and labour usually goes for 650 in my town.

I just did the clutch and throwout bearing on my GF's 2001 2.5 RS and 450 is a steal for labor, that was such a bitch trying to get that tranny back in there with an atv jack and 2x4s. I have a family friend who got me the clutch kit and I don't remember the exact cost.

from a subaru obs owner myself, i hear that you should buy a 2.5L clutch, instead of the OG 2.2l cause they suck ass. buy the 2.5 on ebay, craigslist wherever and ask them to install it

if your looking for a good around town clutch Exedy has been decent- not the greatest in higher hp platforms-

but I really dont know too much about boobaru clutches- so no help here

idk if Southbend has a clutch for you- but thats who ive used on cars past and present- their customer service is top freaking notch

Find a reputable indepenent mechanic. Do research on cost of part and labor so you know what to expect. dealerships always rip everyone off

call around to a couple shops and ask for pricing, i was quoted anywhere from $600-1100 for my altima. see if you can find reviews on the shop and if they seem to be pretty reputable

4-750. Some wheres in that range depending on the car and the shop. If you can pull the engine out and do it yourself you'll save most of that. But who the fuck has the means for that

don't buy a clutch off of ebay, super bad experiances with me as well as my friend. an oem clutch should be fine, but it all depends on how you drive i suppose.

doing a clutch yourself isn't difficult as long as you have the tools. ask around to your friends and see if they can help you do it. paying your friend 10 mcdoubles is a lot cheaper than labor from a shop, plus you get some hands on experiance.

I've had several clutches replaced, bought them all off ebay, each lasted as long or longer than the original in the car. $600-800 parts and labor.

Its more the labor that gets the price up there. On most subarus around that time, you need an engine hoist to get to the clutch. So unless you have a lot of auto tools, you probably cant do it your self, so your kinda stuck with paying a lot for it...I think

whatever you do, change the throwout bearing. mine was done recently, but not the bearing. now my bearing squeaks.

the work price seems about right. think about all the shit the techs have to go through just to get to the clutch before any work can be done. It's a pain in the ass and takes a long time. So the labor charge seems about right.
