Final Cut Pro help, HVX200

when i open final cut pro 7 after its done loading all the presets it just disappears, whats up with that? And is there anyway to upload hvx200 shots with final cut express 4? My buddy is letting me learn more about the cam for awhile so im just trying to figure it out.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure FCE doesn't accommodate DVCPROHD, the working format of the HVX200. You'll need final cut pro (at least 5 I think... might be 6) as well as a driver to get your computer to recognize your camera.


From there it's a simple log and capture or log and transfer, depending on your version.

and also this isn't the only format of the HVX, standard formats as well and MiniDV.

I believe you can use your footage in FCE if you dub it onto the tape, but it will be standard definition, and slightly more difficult to work with.

The only tape format the HVX recognizes is mini dv. It doesnt even do DVC Pro like the dvx, so its a pretty awful thing to do and you might as well be using a GL1 if you do this.

Oh man I dont exactly remember how everything works in FCP 5. I know you can log and transfer, so you have to work with the mxfs. I actually think FCP 5 runs mxfs and is capable of DVC Pro HD, its just a pain.

Im guessing you downloaded FCP illegally? Funny thing is I dont know if I have ever heard of anyone getting the entire Final Cut Studio to work flawlessly from a torrent download.

My best suggestion to you would be to uninstall FCP and just re download it. I don believe FCE likes DVC Pro or can handle it.

Your going to need quicktime pro too I believe for the DVC Pro plug in. I dont know if that works on a torrent downloaded FCP, but it usually just comes with FCS.

i would expect FCE to at the least transcode hd mini dv footage to Apple Intermediate. Thats what Imovie does when you import through there. It seems odd to me that there would be no support at all...

The HPX and HVX (i believe the HVX does atleast when you recor to p2) can record to DVCpro50 which is better than the SD that the DVX shoots. Also the HVX has native 16:9 sensors, making SD widesceen sharper.

Barry Green did a test awhile back on DVX SD vs. HVX SD (DVCpro50) and HVX won.

That's just oen test though......

Not what I am saying. Yes DVC Pro 50 is superior and your post is correct, but I think you misread what I wrote. 50 mb/s vs 25 mb/s. Theres a reason it was invented.

Im sorry if my post was confusing. I was talking about mini dv recording. The HVX is not capable of recording to DVC Pro or DVC Pro 50 on mini dv tapes. The only format the HVX can record onto tapes is mini dv.

Sorry if it seemed otherwise since I quoted someone else, but all of it. I was trying to give you ideas on how to get it to work and what DVC Pro HD is compatible with. I was just discussing that anything with tapes on the HVX is not the way to go since all it can record on the tap deck is mini DV and not DVC Pro (like the dvx) or DVC Pro 50.

I believe it can actually playback and offload dvc pro footage from a DVX though which is a bit odd.

Word, I didn't know it was all directed at me. but I think you misunderstood my first post- I was writing it as advice to the OP... I have no problems with my setup at all

I was telling him that an option for him, because FCE doesn't work with DVC proHD( sort of a last resort option), was to use the dubbing feature on the HVX to dub it to standard def MiniDV.
I never shoot miniDV, I shoot in DVCproHD and edit in FCP 6, not 5. I was telling him that I believe 5 is the earliest one to accept Panasonic P2 log and capture.

I never had any problems of my own, I was just trying to help the OP with his
