Question on choice

there have been a lot of threads, and by a lot i just mean actual threads (as the content has pretty much been the same in each) on the topic of homosexuality;

is it a choice, are you genetically predisposed with a combination of environmental factors, or are you flat out born with it... those are not the questions here.


What I want to know is, do you choose to be homophobic? I guess a follow up question is, what would it take to prove to you that your position on homosexuality was wrong...obviously this is more directed at the crowd that says homosexuality is bad & a choice, but to make it fun, if you think it's not a choice, what would it take to change this, as well?

I think homophoboicy (isn't a word but I'm using it anyways) is something that comes from nurture vs a genetic way of acquiring it. It's the persons choice to hate, they aren't forced to.

The nature of your question proves a lot of ignorance on its own.

You assume that everyone who believes that homosexuality is wrong and a choice is homophobic.

Wrong.

There are plenty of people, myself and friends included who believe that homosexuality is wrong and a choice, but have and love homosexual friends the same as we would love any other friend who we believed to be making a poor life choice.

I am very intrigued by your assertion that sexual orientation is a choice because it just doesn't make any sense to me. Across all of the threads discussing homosexuality on NSG recently I have yet to read a single logical explanation of how someone can possibly 'choose' what or who they are sexually attracted to.

I assume you are straight? In that case do you choose to fantasise over women, not men? If so I assume you could therefore choose to be turned on by thinking about men instead if you really wanted to? How old were you when you decided you wanted to be attracted to women instead of men?

If you can't provide logical answers to any such questions then it suggests it's your prejudice that is the issue and not the question of whether someone can 'choose' to be gay or not.

i believe that if you are truly gay, you are born that way.

however, i know people who "claim" to be gay... and thats by choice. i guess you could call them bi or whatever... i MAY be wrong, maybe they are gay and are ashamed (because of all the fucks out there who think being gay is some sort of crime) but i have friends who have appeared straight their entire lives and after some bad relationships changed their sexual orientation or appeared to change it... maybe they just did a good job at hiding the truth. who knows.


but i do know that you can't make a gay man/woman straight, just like you can't make a straight man/woman gay... unless it's what they want. and generally, it's not what they want unless it's what they feel....

Either you phrased your question extremely poorly, or you implied that everyone who doesn't believe that homosexuality is OK is homophobic.

Either way you should choose your words much more carefully than you have if you expect this topic not to end up in a shit storm.

I think that most people who think homosexuality is "wrong" are cunts. They may not be "afraid" of gay people, however, it seems like they are given their actions/thoughts.

Nothing wrong with being a "-phobic". I have a phobia of religious people who think homosexuality is wrong because it says so in a 2000 year old book. As long as you don't try and tell gay people they can't be gay and don't deserve equal rights, i couldn't give a shit what you think.

Nope. It's a frank question; is homophobia a choice. You could also ask if it's like arachnophobia, or agoraphobia, or is it just an irrational behavior.

Would the root cause of homosexuality be correlated to the root cause of homophobia?

It's a pretty impersonal topic. I'm not making a value judgment on anyone. Though, given the way you read the OP, you almost force me to judge how you think -- given the way you interpreted the OP.
