Gopro editing

alright guys i know im probly gonna get some hate for this thread cuz its probly a repost but whatever...so i just got a gopro hd and started using it, and got some recordings down but i wanted to know a couple things about it. first, when i tried to import it onto my computer it didnt come in very good quality even though i shot it in r4 so...i was wondering:
1-what is the best software to use for editing (mainly free; i have imovie if that works)
2-how to import and get the full hd or quality out of what you shot (i hope that makes sense)
3-what is the best shooting method/setting? i thought it might be r4 but i have heard different things.

if your imovie has HD support it should be fine. i usually just drag my clips to my documents and they look good.

as for how you should film, it depends.
if you're filming somebody else and you might be doing slow motion, i recommend r3.
if you're filming POV footage, use r4.
if you're filming somebody else and won't be doing slow motion, use r5.

i dont think r5 is actually of any use since on internet 720p is the norm and actually 720p looks good enough, i really dont think that 1080p is needed.

R3 is the way to go.

uh really?

youtube and vimeo both support 1080p. 1080p is quickly becoming the norm. plus 1080p is just better because you have more flexibility in what you can do with the shot.

In order for your r3 footy to be uploaded to imovie, you have to put it in iphoto first, or else it only uploads half the clip. Finally figured that out after a season.

ye you are right but what i mean is that if he uses it for skiing and he is not video pro he s not gonna take advatage of 1080 so he should just stick to R3 for the moment and when he gets better at editing he may use r5 for lifestyle shots.

i know that youtube and vimeo support 1080p but i still think that 720 p is really good enough for any beginner, it s already and amazing quality.

but you are 100% right it gives you way more flexibility, aand reframing is much better in 1080p for exemple.

ye and it definitly looks better, but i dont know i am still a noob cause i started editing recently but i wouldn like to have to work with 2 different types of footages at the beginning.

how do you handle the difference between R4 and the others for instance ? just curious cause im gonna hoots some pov and i agree R4 looks better but how do i put this in the middle of a video that s in 720p ?

you can just throw it in there and accept the aspect ratio stand, but what i usually do is scale up the 960 clip and then stretch it to make it 16:9. but if you're going to be using 720 or 1080, you're better off not filming 960 in the first place

sorry to thread jack but i'm getting an hd hero and i'm no video or editing pro. can i make so decent edits with good quality footage by taking the footage off of the camera and putting it in iphoto then imovie from there to edit it?

also does the battery drain from cold? is it insulated well? my last camera barely lasted 5 minutes in cold weather.

the gopro has a battery warmer built into the camera, so the battery will last longer then your traditional digital camera would. as far as insulation goes, the case is just a piece of plastic.

ok cool thanks bro. so once you put it in iphoto how do you get it into imovie? sorry im a retard when it comes to this whole editing thing...and also, which imovie do you have? i think i have imovie 08 and iwas wondering if thats easy to use or if thats what you use.

on most editing system there is a file tab. open that up and go to import or import media or whatever. find it on your computer and it will import.
