Coming out of a surplus from Clinton's reign, I HIGHLY doubt the USD reached it's lowest point with Bush. Considering bush's spending habits were far more reserved...

And to expand on my prior statement, Clinton wasn't responsible for the surplus. Reagan and the current spending habits of the econoy at the time were. I can go so much more into this, but I feel it's so unnecasry at this point. Whole 'nother can of worms.

Inflation and depreciation is differing among countries however. Different economic structures. For example:

The Australian dollar in comparison to the USD shows that during the presidency of Obama, the USD has in fact reached a significantly less valuable exchange rate in Autralia http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/h10/Hist/dat00_al.txt

There is no one form of currency that can be used as a standard to show the fluxuation of the USD as a whole. With that said, even in comparison to the Euro, it wasn't until the end of Bush's presidency did it spike and that was with Bush's conservative economic plan.

With an increase in taxation under Obama and a plan to "save" America and our dollar, he should have INCREASED the value of the dollar far more significantly than .2 cents against the Euro. He's had 2 years. Bush heald a greater and more steady USD value for his entire 2 terms. The proof is in the link you sent me.

However you can't always point fingers at Presidents. That being said it goes for both parties. One must take into account the inevitable economic expenses that are encountered. For example, 9/11, the on-going war in Iraq, some-what recent war against Terrorism, etc.

But then again Obama hasn't encountered any dramatic economic expenses in his term besides his lavish parties ever thursday night at the White House and his recent weekish long trip to Africa which cost 200 million dollars a day of tax payers money and proved to be fruitless in his own words...

And as to "government needs to stay out of the economy", its that laissez faire philosophy that got us into the financial crisis. In 1999, glass–steagall was repealed by clinton and the republican congress. This significantly reduced government's control over the economic sector, but is credited with allowing the sub-prime morgage crisis to occur. If the economy is "left to run it's course", financial institutions will start fucking over people left and right, just like they have been.

As for the bailouts like TARP and the auto industry, the government didn't force anything on companies like AIG and GM, they volunteered for it. The money used to bail out these companies will be repaid to the government with interest, and in many ways stopped the financial industry from falling apart. My problem with TARP was that it didnt include enough conditions on reforming the industry like the GM bailout did

there are some economists who use the theory of purchasing power parity as a universal inflation/currency comparative tool. not many are keen on it however.

if you want a comparison for inflationary expectations you can look at the treasury yield curve, inflation expectations are subsiding from an incredibly steep curve at the beginning of the year but are still high.

QE2 is deliberately devaluing the dollar, why do you think gold (hoping woozy doesn't see this) is having it's micro bubble at the moment. people are fleeing safe havens to the "safest" of all. but anyway debasing the dollar is useless as you guys don't export anything anyway.

and anyway China wouldn't have mad such a fuss about it if they didn't believe that the US were intentionally devaluing their currency. thankfully the G20 stepped in before the shit hit the fan.

bail outs- they bailed out systemically important companies. if GM had gone down it would have take down their suppliers and in turn Ford, why else would your major competitor back a bail out of your firm?so if you think unemployment is high now think what would have happened without a auto industry. bail outs were necessary.

to anyone who thinks the new deal was the cure for the Great Depression you're wrong. the root and solution was monetary policy. so this is the 2nd round of QE will have little effect, (did the first one? no) it's a tool to alter the currency.

anyway this may produce some hate - with QE the lead arranger at the fed used to be a partner at Goldman Sachs, guess who the fed are buying the bonds from, yup that's right GS. $$ for GS as they buy them at par.

The only president who did what was needed in financial terms was FDR. Reaganomics could easily be perceived as the first step that led over the course of the following thirty years to the current economic crisis seen today. Of course, not one person is really to blame, or political party. They have all failed, and are continuing to do so. This crisis is just the beginning, big money and human greed is going to cause much, much more financial sorrow in the years to come. Where not out of the woods yet, not even close.

OK...just read the first page of this thread so excuse me if I'm way off the track of the thread. Yes, both the Bush's created a budget deficit. Do you think the fact that both of them were in office during a time of war (both major wars, in fact) has anything to do with the budget deficit that each man created? Probably not right? Shipping millions of troops, tons and tons of gear, weapons, ammo, fuel and other equipment must not cost much, right? Let alone spending all that time and money on R&D and manufacturing. That must not cost too much. Right...?

And I'd like to point out that what YOU said was bullshit. According to your own chart, the country was a little over 400 billion dollars in debt during Bush's presidency in 2004. According to the LA Times, as of October 19, 2010, the country was over 13 Trillion dollars in debt.

The article goes on to state that President Obama has spent almost 5 million dollars per day. That figure extrapolates out to 3.3 trillion dollars during Obama's presidency. Yeah, Obama alone has spent OVER THREE TRILLION DOLLARS IN LESS THAN 2 YEARS IN OFFICE.

A few things that bug me about what Obama has done.

1. I'm no bush lover but Obama is an idiot...don't believe me? his approval rating is lower than bush's thats pretty fucking low.

2.during an unstable economic time he shoved the healthcare bill down the peoples throats (correct me if I spelled that wrong). Not only going to destroy private healthcare business, but also damage the economy. Do not get me wrong there are plenty of Americans who need health insurance but a great deal of the numbers of uninsured are simply college students who know they are healthy and say "fuck it I'm probably not going to get kidney failure, I don't wanna pay my hard earned salary on healthcare". Also I believe that it is unconstitutional and a direct violation of our freedom to be forced to essentially buy a product of the government, especially if its paying for unnecessary cosmetic surgery of a stranger ( a benefit of this bill).

3.He ran his platform playing the desperation of the American public promising seemingly infinite promises. Most of which were never followed through with. i.e. Guantanamo bay and the war in the middle east.

4. Obama supports partial birth abortion. What this means is you carry out the abortion when the baby's developed enough to survive outside the womb. Its one thing to kill during the very very premature stages but thats just a little far.

I used to post in threads like these, arguing a point while also bragging about my credentials. I am now much older and wiser: i will now only brag.

I am a graduating double major at a top 50 undergrad. I am a polisci/history major with distinction (honors). I am a dual concentration in international relations and constitutional law. For history my concentration is presidential history. Next fall, I will attend a top 5 law school.

I think too many young kids have fallen victim to the pesimisstic illusion. How do people have such a pessimisstic view of america these days?

Theres a lot of hype over a rising china etc, but the united states still controls 1/3 of the world's total economy, our economy is roughly 4-5 times as large as china's, we account for 45% of the world's total military spending, 65% of g20 total military spending, and we only spend 4.7% of our GDP on military expenditures. Compare that to china's 10+% and russia's 10+%. During WW2 we spent 38.8% of our gdp. WE invent nearly everything and control most lines of communication.

Any scholar would agree we, the usa, hold an unprecendented preponderance over the world that even the roman empire at its height could not compete with. And this hegemony, which according to all the classical and realist theories of IR should not exist, rose within the last 50 years.

So clearly we have been doing something right.
