The US will be spending a whopping $200 million (Rs900 crore) per day on President Barack Obama's visit to the city.

"The huge amount of around $200 million would be spent on security, stay and other aspects of the presidential visit," a top official of the Maharashtra government privy to the arrangements for the high-profile visit said.

About 3,000 people including Secret Service agents, US government officials and journalists will accompany the president.

Several officials from the White House and US security agencies are already in Mumbai for the past one week with helicopters, a ship and high-end security instruments.

"Except for personnel providing immediate security to the president, the US officials may not be allowed to carry weapons. The state police is competent to take care of the security measures and they would be piloting the presidential convoy," the official said on condition of anonymity.

you have to take into account where he's going, the countries in the area, the stability of the country itself, and the president himself being the first black president and during a time when america is probably the most hated. as stated already, it ran us over 17 million just for Bush to travel PRIVATELY multiple times to Texas over his presidency. that's a place within our own country at a place where he already had security and at his own leisure. and here's what a quick search pulled up for bush's entourage he had as president...

The US is not paying for all the 3000 entourage. India and Pakistan are not the stablist nations on earth, they are nuclear powers, India has one of the fastest growing economies in the world, its neighbours with china. There are tons of reasons Obama is going. Most likely this cost isnt that outrageous compared to previous presidential trips, its just being publisized because it's Obama. Its just the cost of doing politics

The double standard between what Obama can do and what Bush could do is fucking amazing. Bush do something like this everyone saying "oh, it's OK" would be screaming from the rooftops as if they found a pic of Bush wearing a KKK Dunce hat while hanging a black man.

national geographic did a show on air force one and its costs+ entourage- this is about right

when bush wanted to visit baghdad for 6 hours- it cost the us roughly 355 million dollars- and that with all of our own equipment-

Sorry. It's fucking hypocritical and hypocrites are the one thing in this world that piss me off more than hipster fuckheads.

I supported Obama in the Primaries too. Donated $50 to him. I now regret doing that cause he hasn't done ANYTHING he promised. Instead of losing the usual gov't BULLSHIT and getting a guy that is wiling to be transparent and honest with people, we get a guy that runs the federal gov't like he is Tony Soprano. If I can't buy you off to support me then I strongarm you in. Hypocrites piss me off more than anything in this world and so many people going "oh, it's fine that's just how shit goes down" were the same people bitching and moaning that Bush went TO HIS OWN RANCH with the Join Chiefs to discuss business.

It's pissing me off and I have every right to bitch about it since I voted. And he better fucking pay me back my $50 because he isn't doing what he said he would do.

You are from Quebec so you probably didn't see this but during the healthcare debate he would either give money to state's in order to get their votes to pass it or tell them "I won't help you if you get in trouble" if they didn't want to vote for it. He strong armed people to vote for his ideas by essentially threatening them.

The "change" he brought wasn't the change he said he would bring.

I didn't read the entire thread but I just saw on CNN where the figure came from and I now see it's been brought up.  Anderson Cooper just tried to compare it Bush's trip to China.  I'm not convinced yet because I can't find anywhere that says how long he was there and how many people he took with him.  CNN says $50 million for the entire trip.  I hope we hear more about this as more info comes out because 2-3000 sounds absurd.  Take a look at the hotel, it's nuts.

I'd be all for doing something to force people that are un-employed and don't REALLY need welfare (you know the people that live in an OK house but are on welfare cause they got laid off and were too lazy to find another job) into a job but fact is there aren't any available. The military sorta is but if you don't want to be in the military then I don't think your comrades would want you there either.

First of all, $200M is probably grossly overestimated.

Secondly, regardless of the actual cost, that's how much security would cost whether it is president Obama or Bush or whomever.

Thirdly, visiting India is a Presidential necessity. As one of the most rapidly growing economies in the world, it's a relationship that needs to be cultivated. Furthermore, India has its own host of security concerns whether it be related to Iran, Kashmir, China, Russia, or Somalia and the USA has an obligation to discuss these international affairs with India.

Regardless of whether Obama visits India or whether Manmoham Singh visits the USA, the USA is still going to have to foot a significant security bill. That's the price of doing business and being a global leader. Get used to it.

That figure -- first thrown out by a single Indian media outlet and now viral on conservative talk radio -- is wildly, wildly off the mark.

The problem is that the costs for these trips are impossible to determine, for many of the president's expenses would be incurred whether he was visiting India or Atlanta or simply hanging around the White House. Obama's India trip starts an Asian swing that includes South Korea, Indonesia and Japan.

The administration isn't inclined to detail costs, most of which deal with security.

"The numbers reported in this article have no basis in reality," said White House spokesman Tommy Vietor. "Due to security concerns, we are unable to outline details associated with security procedures and costs, but it's safe to say these numbers are wildly inflated."

To be sure, these trips do cost millions of dollars per day.

Whenever a president travels, he or she takes a mini-White House with them, from bulletproof limousines to gaggles of aides. This can come in awfully handy when trouble happens, such as the terrorist attacks on 9/11 when George W. Bush was in Florida. Ronald Reagan was traveling in Asia when the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Russia blew up in 1986.

Foreign trips are expensive but are a staple of presidential duties. India is a rising economy power. It is next to -- and has an intense rivalry with -- one of the world's most dangerous countries, Pakistan. It can be a counterweight to threats from China. Any president is going to deal with India.

Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim majority nation. South Korea is the site of a G-20 global economic summit. Japan is hosting the annual Asian economic summit, which Obama's predecessors also attended. There's no evidence that Obama's team is spending any more money than its predecessors, taking inflation into account.

Yes, these gigs will cost money. But $200 million a day? Not even close.

One other thing to keep in mind: The Secret Service is not going to let anything happen to a president overseas if they can help it. They're going to do -- and spend -- whatever it takes. That's just a fact of life.

One last thing: The media organizations accompanying Obama will pay their own expenses.

I think it's pretty clear the venom and vitriol with which Obama is criticized—in many cases, but certainly not ALL— is tied to latent racism, and a general fury at the idea that someone other than whom they supported, let alone a black-ISH man, is the face of our country. Underlying all of this, of course, is fear; fear that the image and make-up of this country is shifting and becoming....well.....browner. It's pitiful. I can literally 'hear' people fearing that black men are going to descend on the posh suburbs and fuck all of the white women.

To disagree with his politics, or question his decision making is great...necessary even, but I find that when someone begins to criticize him, they often reveal themselves to be incredibly spiteful and hateful; to a degree which cannot be accounted for simply in terms of his politics.

To reiterate, Obama has done, or not done, plenty to warrant legitimate criticism. No question. In fact, as a campaign donor and someone who voted for him, I'm personally disappointed with how things have gone thus far. Sure, he inherited a mess, but honestly, which President didn't (not Bush hating)? I feel let down over the health care "reform", and I do not really agree with how he's handled the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, in that he didn't immediately end those fights like he pledged to do. I think he's taken FAR too much flack over the sputtering economy, but we are actually approaching a year straight of month to month economic growth—encouraging. To this point, he has not done nearly enough wrong to warrant the staggering amount of hatred he receives, and he has accomplished some things.

When people start posting shit like this, meaning the OP, that pretty much tells you the score. THIS IS NOT NEWS. And, further—as I suggested in my first post—, probably not even fucking true, or is incredibly misleading. Look at the source in that article. They also quoted an "anonymous" Indian police official who offered his thoughts that his police force would protect Obama just fine...does that sound like it's worth reporting? LOOK AT THIS WITH A REAL, HONEST, CRITICAL EYE!! This is clearly a slander/smear attempt and is utterly counterproductive...for anyone.
