Don't listen to this hot air. His opinion should always be taken with a grain of salt.
I went to JMU for six years, got my undergrad and masters there. It is an awesome school. Are there NOVA "guido trash" there? Yep. Are these at every other school in VA? Yep. Are there awesome people there as well? Of course. I think JMU has a great student body overall. Personally, I had an amazing college experience. I lived in a house of 8 guys, four of whom loved to shred. I made my schedule one semester of just Tues/Thurs classes and went to the Nut three or four days a week. (didn't do so well academically though...) College was quite fun.
As for the ski specific "scene": Massanutten is a very small mountain with a park that is fun enough to satisfy the east coast park rat. But, by about February you start to complain about poorly shaped jumps and a million kids sitting at the top of the tiny park that are in your way. Wintergreen is a slight step up in terms of the overall mountain, but their park really is no better, except that is serviced by two lifts, one of which is a six person high speed, making laps a bit more fun than just sitting on a T-bar all day at Massanutten. That being said, neither is a great mountain, nor is anything in the area until you get over to Snowshoe. If you went to JMU I guarantee you could find some people who rip and have fun. Same with UVA or Tech - which happens to be less than 2 hours from Snowshoe. HOpe that is something to chew on.
