Mac People of NS

First of let me say I have always had a PC and no very very little about Macs.

My friend of a friend is selling his MacBook pro and I'm wondering what to offer him. Also, I'm planning on doing some light duty video editing but with HD video, I'm wondering if this computer will be able to handle it, here a the specs:

15" model from 2006 (first gen?)
2.14GHZ Core 2 Duo
1GB of Ram
120GB Hard Drive
Mac OS Tiger
Microsoft Office 2007

It has signs of use, there are scuffs on the case. I really don't have a clue what to off this guy and I don't even know if it'll be able to handle HD video.

Your opinions wanted.

I think the new ones 09-10 can do HD but I'm not positive. All I know is I have a new macbook pro 13 inch and it's the best investment of my life. Get it. Prob worth 1500, offer him 1000.

ok, arabian, I get it. You're really into computers, but everyone calls a windows PC a PC. I know it stands for personal computer, and I know a Mac is technically a personal computer. But as a general consumer it's just so much easier to call it a "PC" and a "Mac" instead of "a personal computer running windows" and "personal computer running OS X".

it depends how much you'd buy it for, but it's not worth a ton...I have an imac from that era and to be honest it's starting to run out of steam. OS X Tiger is on its last legs, and the hard drive is filling up....

If you're willing to upgrade the OS and use an external hard drive, it might be good.

dude i have the same comp and i just installed a solid state drive (159 after rebate) and snow leopard (29$ at apple store) and this thing is running stupid smooth. offer 500, do this

Offer $400. Other than the processor and screen size the thing is basically a netbook. Also, the hard drive is probably sketchy considering it is almost 5 years old and is a laptop.

i have the third generation right now...
upgraded hard drive to 180 gigs
upgraded ram to 2gb
10.6

I was going to sell it for $800
But then I dropped it on a cement stair and broke the LCD....

Oddly enough it is still worth $300 on ebay. I'm trying to find a uneducated person on craigslist to let me buy one with a working monitor and killed motherboard for under $200... then I'll fix it and keep it another year or two.

Otherwise I'll probably part it out and hopefully get more than $300 for it.

if you're trying to edit HD video 1GB of ram is not gonna cut it. you're gonna want to bump that up to 4GB. and like everyone else said, new hard drive and put the newest OS on there. $500 seems fair.

no more than $450

the 2.16 core 2 duo macbook pro is old. it has an ati video card. and its just not worth any more than $450 in good working order.

i buy onces that need minor repairs (2.16 core 2 duo's) for $250-300 and resell them for $450-500 because that is just the going rate.

if you want a 2.4ghz core 2 duo macbook (not macbook pro). 2gb ram, 160gb hard drive.

i will be able to sell that unit tonight.

And it will be selling for $500-540ish depending on how much this last part will run me.

let me know if you want it. or want mac help.

i work at an authorized gsx apple repair center.

give me a serial number of any macbook and i will tell you its history (repair history, specs, etc). I can even find out if its had water damage, been dropped, or is stolen as well.

i'll put this here.
i am getting ready to buy a 13 inch macbook. it needs to be able to run Logic with Mainstage and CS5. Also a video editing software, either premier or FC.
primarily it would run logic to control various instruments in a live or studio setting

is it best to go with a Pro? or would the regular 13 inch macbook suffice?

Mac runs pretty much better than windows and better features just sometimes has problems with editing. Careful buying a mac if you edit a lot

the memory in a mac is nothing special.

you can do it yourself.

although you have to take the top case off. macbook or macbook pro.

you need a torx screw driver, and a screw driver to open the top case.

but dont get a 2.16 core 2 duo man. that thing is 4 years old.

turns out he lost the power cord too so it looks like I have to pour $550 into this thing to get it to where I want it.

I think if you do buy upgrade the RAM because 1GB is not going to do much with HD footage or any good editing program.

I say hold off on the purchase and get the unibody. They have less problems, have a sturdier construction, and have much better specs as Apple bumps them up every time they release a new computer. Also check craigslist and hunt for one, thats what I ended up doing and now I'm on one of my most prized possessions, a unibody macbook pro. Just for your information I was able to find mine with the following specs:
13" macbook pro
2.26 ghz intel core 2 duo
4gb RAM
500gb Hard drive

with the following software included:
adobe cs5 suite
final cut studio
ableton
ilife
etc.

I paid $900 and it came with the box that still had everything inside and warranty until next year. Definitely search around. I love mine.

You could probably get away with the mb if your pressed for cash, but if you have the money, the mbp is worth the money, especially for live recording and things of that nature
