How to Drive in Snow

So im just going to continue the stereotype here that californians can't drive in the snow. I have always had my old man drive me up to tahoe, and in college up here at WSU i never had a car so always rode with friends. So in the interests of keeping all NS'ers safe this winter driving on shitty mountain roads i think we should have a tip list to driving in the snow/ice.

I'll Start:

-Pump brakes to slow down gradually, or shift down if in a manual

in cali you don't have to worry about driving in the snow, they like to close I-80 in a quarter inch of slush. us vermonters who live on huge hills are pro at driving in the snow

Just got my license and ive never driven in the snow but in drivers ed we learned that you"steer at you target" if you slide. Dont look at where your sliding, dont panic, steer towards your target

Dont drive a 240 with a welded diff, or you will most certainly die.

last winter my mom got her wrx stuck in a ditch like an 8th of a mile from our house on a snowy morning, and i got her out with my 2wd F150. The my car is one of the worst cars in snow i have every been in or driven in, but i got spiked tires that work pretty well now. Not really a tip but its really nice to have a big car when you start to slide because you can hit things but its going to hurt the other car or a railing more than it hurts you. Our third car is a 99 4runner and that is probably one of the best cars for snow ever.

I think it's crazy that you don't actually have to learn how to do it in action before you get your license, especially because I've heard how pathetically easy it is to get your license.

depends on what you think of as your target. It's better just to learn to counter any slides and turn into the slide.

When I was learning I just went and found some wide icy back roads and played around getting the feel for my car sliding and how much throttle and countering was required to control it.

Okay, my response, having had a license for 10+ years.

I do have a Subaru AWD, but realize that this is not carte blanche to drive at 60 mph on icy roads. Too many people seem to think that AWD or a SUV make them invincible.

Go slower, you're going to make it to the ski area, rather show up a few minutes late than not make it there alive.

Lower gear on uphill and downhill. This will save you braking too much when going downhill.

Gentle on the brakes, your first way of slowing down is to let go of the gas.

Turn down the music, if the conditions are really sketchy, you gotta concentrate on the road.

I don't worry about my driving, rather I worry about the driver in front and behind me.

If you get out of your car to push, shift into neutral first.
