As many of you know Dubstep was created as an attempt to modernize and add electronic sounds to traditional Jamaican dub music. Dub music is essentially instrumental reggae, and has been around far longer than reggae or even the Marcus Garvey Rastafari movement. It is the basis of all modern reggae music and was created by early 1920s jamaican "music men". It wasn't popularized until the 1960s however until guys like lee "scratch" perry brought it to the masses. At this point it was often the instrumental tracks behind reggae that was then sped up form 70to 140 BPM, giving it its distinctive jungle like romp. See example of modern Dub below:
Both Dubstep and reggae/Dub music have the same base. A beat around either 70 or 140 BPM in a 4/4 pattern with emphasis on the 1st and 3rd notes, unlike most music which the primary beat is on the 4th note of each bar. with the development of dubstep it brought these simple ideas of simple instrumentals to the masses and droning reggae like beats to people who previously never would listen to music that was so downtempo and bass heavy.
For some reason very few artist ever took the time to do a father and son like reunion of Reggae and Dubstep genres of music. It is unfortunate but the truth. I love what little Raggastep i have found, and think its a shame such a great new branch of music be so kept from the masses...
