This year I am doing a season in the french alps. I live in the UK so don't have close proximity to the mountain and can't afford to spend a full season in the alps without working so I am working for a holiday company. This week I had a staff 'meet and greet'. I found a lot of the people who were there hadn't skied much or hadn't skied at all, and a lot of them seemed to either be bitchy snow bunnies or cocky preppy guys. I am always open to meeting different types of people but I was disappointed to see that for the majority of people in the room, the reasons behind doing their season was to get laid and party. I'm not saying this is bad as don't get me wrong I love to party but I really thought a few more peoples priorities would be to ski. Has anyone else found this also to be true where you are or am I talking complete bullshit?

Thanks NS!! this thread has refueled my stoke to get out there and ski... and hopefully meet some sweet people along the way! NS never fails to put a smile on my face! To those of you doing a season, I hope to meet you out there.. would be awesome to meet some NSers in the alps!

and to mike.... i think i am training in les arcs so hopefully i'll see you there!

And hell yea to the britishness in this thread :D

do any of you guys know if they take people on who are 18? its just when i leave college i'll have nothing to do as im on the waiting list for the navy and it would be possibly the best thing to do haha, its just some companies tend not to take 18 year olds on?

yeah, they do. I think Mark warner is a bit weird about it but as far as i know the rest are cool with 18 year olds.

Im expecting the same thing to happen when I go out in december,
To be honest all I care about is getting up early, shredding, sitting on a sofa watching edits when I cant ski and doing some work to pay for being there, just ignore the preppy snotty fuckers and let them get on with their gap yahhhhh haha

I'd give you two pieces of advice:
1. Look for the seasonnaire based resorts. I.e. don't head to Val D'Isere or the Trois Vallées as they are set up for tourists. Resorts like Morzine/Avoriaz Tignes, Mayrhofen and Laax are geared towards seasonnaires because of their emphasis on freestyle/freeride.
2.On the jobs front, look for the right kind of job. The chalet hosts/hotel hosts in my opinion worked too hard and tended to save themselves for the evening. I worked as a kitchen porter and I found that as we were doing the shittiest job going, all we cared about was the skiing. Also, ski rental shops are a good bet, as even though they work in the day, they get reasonable time off and , often take advantage of the powder days.
As for the people, If you look hard enough you'll find plenty of guys looking to ride all the time, if not in your company, then in the resort.

I will have to respectfully disagree with some of what you're saying. Val D'Isere is indeed a very nice place to do a season, with a solid group of people who are down to ride. Tignes is a pretty horrible place as is Val Thorens, but in my experience some of the smaller towns in Trois Vallees are quite nice, such as St Martin De Belleville and Meribel. I dont quite get your point about the jobs. Basically it sounds like you're saying that because you had the worst job, you had the best? In my view it doesn't matter so much about what kind of job you do, but what kind of hours. As long as it's not between 10 in the morning and 17 in the eve (sorry bout the hours, i'm Danish, i don't get the a.m p.m thing), you're good to go!

I'm not saying Val d'Isere isn't a nice resort- in fact it has one of the best areas in the world, as does the Trois Vallées. Obviously what I'm saying doesn't apply to everyone and I'm generalising but, if you have the same concerns as the thread's author then I'm saying head to the resorts that are rated as seasonnaire places. Regarding jobs, my point is that the type of work I was doing had little responsibility and gave me a lot of time to ski. As a chalet host or rep i.e. more responsibility, you may be paid slightly more but you won't necessarily meet as many people whose main goal is to get a subsistence job and just shred as much as possible IMO. However, I do definitely agree with you about the job giving you free time between 10 and 5 being the most important bit.

There is still plenty of jobs in the 3 vallees, what you would be able to get in any other resorts. The popular europen resorts are way over run by stuck up chalets bitches, tour rep whores and all sorts of other retards.

It's all about japan son..

I'm heading out to St Anton in a couple of weeks. I've got no job and no place to live so i'm taking all the money i've got in the world out with me which should last me 2 weeks at most. It better work otherwise im going to be fucked and really pissed off at anyone who is out there who doesn't give a shit about the skiing!!

Ya I'm off in Les Arcs for a week, then Austria! Facebook tells me that coaches 1-4 are going to Les Arcs 2000 for training as well.

Should be good!

Simps, good luck man! I'll be there for the winter - let me know if you want to ride one day if you manage to sort out a job.

I'm still looking for a job as a chalet host, does anyone have any recommendations/knowledge of which companies have spaces still to fill?

I'm working at a restaurant currently and as you can imagine xmas is a killer time for making loads of tips etc so its looking like im going to be heading out first week of january with some money and look around for those people that cant hack it as a chalet host. Dont know where i will stay so if you guys can tell me the best+cheapest places to stay in the 3 valleys area (courchevel, meribel, val t, mottaret, la tania would be ideal) it would be much appreciated.

Hope to see you all out there....eventually!

Val T is banging, I'm back there for the third time this season, The park will be even better this year and it's super high so, snow.

Sophie, bit late now, but you would have been much better off going out with accom mid nov then put yourself about and work in a bar. If your a hlaf goodlooking girl then you'll be snapped up for a bar job in no time at all. Ski all day - work in the evening. I dont mean to piss on your bonfire, but you've made a mistake is working for a chalet company - i'd get out now if I were you!

If your idea of a good time is to spend the whole season chasing after incompetent families trying to get their 6 year old to their ski school of choice or want to be paid fuck all and wait for that amazing changeover night when you can go 'mad' then go ahead - chalet sounds like a great idea. However if you are one of the few people who actually plan to ski during your time in the Alpes then you are much better off working in a bar.

Why?
100% of your wage paid each month (not the case with many chalet companies)
No breakfast responsibilities so can get out and catch the first lift on a pow day
Meet and befriend a much wider range of people in a bar
Can go out any night of the week you fancy

for me it is a no brainer

I don't get why there is this elitism... Who gives a shit how she's going about spending a season? Just be stoked she's spending a season in the Alps.

Not everyone is fed with a silver spoon and has thousands of pounds to secure season long accommodation before going out and trying to find a job, that may or may not happen.

I've heard lots of good things regarding the amount of ski time chalet hosts get providing you're organised.

You are the type of asshole that Sophie was talking about in her first post.

Seriously, who the hell wants to hear shit like 'pull out of your job now' just before they start their season, not cool.

I'd probably prefer to work in a bar over a chalet, but there are way less bar jobs to go around, and they are hard to get ahead of time, so for someone doing their first season, chalet is the way to go. Then with some knowledge and contacts do whatever you like the next season.

Depends how early you get there and how much you want the job, I'll think you'll find that especially as a girl if your enthusiastic, competent and personable then its really not that difficult if its what you want.

Granted it is a hell of a lot easier and 'safer' to have a company organise your every move, there is no way that I would be prepared to let someone else do everything for me.

I would love to work in a bar, but as a few people have said, I just don't have the money to ensure i'll have enough to live on, risking the fact i may or may not get a job. I am going out as a chalet assistant so it's not too bad, as long as i get my jobs done i can go ski! I am so stoked to get out there and to be honest, it doesn't matter what job you have... your spending 5 months in the alps for gods sake! I do see where you are coming from though, it would be rad to spend a season working in a bar, but believe me there are a lot of way better looking/ older girls who would pip me to the post in any bar job!
