Maybe try a refurbished from Apples website? Keep checking the local craigslist and ebay, as well... other than that, I don't know

I did that with an iMac about 2 weeks ago, and it has a faulty harddrive, which is probably going to fail soon, there's dust, or something like that in the screen (although not very visible), and the brightness on the screen flickers from time to time. Apple is sending me a new one (or at least a different refurb one), but I'll have to ship mine back, and be without a computer for a few days.

I'm not saying buying refurbished isn't legit, but you risk the hassle of having to send it back/get it repaired. Even though Apple will replace it or fix it for free, it's still time consuming and annoying.

just go to the apple store.
if you show any proof of schooling at all you get a free 8 gig ipod and printer. plus you get your full warranty, a ton of money off the i work programs, and if you ask they will usually discount more. its the safest and best bet to buy a macbook fo sho.

p.s. then i will buy your brand new ipod and take it off your hands :)

keep checking craigslist for sure. I just purchased a 13" unibody macbook pro with the warranty still on it including upgraded parts like a 500gb hard drive, an upgraded 4gb ram(which will come in any 2010 model instead of the earlier mid 2009 which originally just came with 2gb of ram), and programs that I really wanted my microsoft office, ableton, final cut studio, cs5 suite, light room, etc. for $900 with the original box, start up discs, stickers, etc. Definitely my most rewarding purchase other than a pair of skis. Love the damn thing.

I would recommend getting one through a 3rd party reseller like macmall.com

You can usually avoid paying sales tax, and 6-10% of $1000+ can add up quickly.

What I did is I ordered mine through macmall.com.  They threw in a free digital camera and copy of parallels.  I was able to sell those two for about $200 on ebay, so pretty much I got $200 off my computer + no sales tax

i got my 13" macbook for a student price. it was around $1100 or somethin like that. the apple store might have some deals going on. a lot of times if you just ask the salesperson, they'll have an unadvertised discount.

cheap deals at google mac of all trades. but it depends on what they got.  I just bought one from apple.  a 13 inch mac pro for 1400 with warranty and brand new with case and a hdmi converter cord.  the education discount is only $100 off but its better than nothing.
