A "Good Edit"

So in Evan's new reel thread https://newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/571497/ there was a specific comment that grabbed my attention.

"Only reason kids get told not to post edits in the forum is because their edits suck so hes not being a hyporcrite.....

While I agree with the comment and believe the edit was entertaining, it got me thinking. What makes a good edit? Besides good quality skiing and video, what really sets a 5 minute segment apart from the rest?

not really long. I hate super long edits.

well composed shots. Duh.

some form of stabilization or a steady hand. I hate shaky footage.

good skiing. It's pretty much crucial most of the time.

a solid song. If I hate the song, I won't like the edit.

solid editing. no annoying effects, no flashes, nothing else stupid.

how "polished" it is. Does it look like it took a lot of time and the the creator put some thought into it?

Flow. How well the shots go with the editing. Period. You can have some shitty skiing but with a good filmer/editor behind the control, it can look amazing. Having as good song is key, IMO.

This is what i would call "good editing", which is pretty much any edit by kevin, but these two are my favorite.

IMO a song that matches the skiing and creative shots and skiing (plus the other stuff listed above) really take an edit from mediocre to "good"
