if a marine has trouble fending off a young, starving, mountain lion with a chainsaw...


BILLINGS, Montana

Wielding his chain saw as a weapon, a former U.S. Marine says he fought off a starving mountain lion that attacked him while he was camping with his wife and two toddlers in northwestern Wyoming.

Dustin Britton, a 32-year-old mechanic and ex-Marine, said he was alone cutting firewood about 30 meters from his campsite in the Shoshone National Forest when he saw the lion staring at him from some bushes.

Britton revved his 45-centimeter chain saw and tried to back away. But the 45-kilogram lion followed.

As the animal pounced, Britton raised his saw and met it head-on—a collision he said felt like a grown man running right into him.

“It batted me three or four times with its front paws and as quick as I hit it with that saw it just turned away,” he said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Britton later discovered he’d inflicted a gash on the lion’s shoulder. He said he was surprised the damage wasn’t worse.

“You would think if you hit an animal with a chain saw it would dig right in. I might as well have hit it with a hockey stick,” he said.

The wounded animal retreated, leaving Britton with a only small puncture wound on his forearm.

The attack occurred Sunday evening. Wildlife agents shot and killed the lion Monday after it attacked a dog brought in to track the animal.

Authorities say the lion was in poor physical condition and appeared to be starving. The lion was 4 to 5 years old.

Mountain lions are considered reclusive by nature and officials said the circumstances of the attack were highly unusual. Wyoming officials have documented only eight cases of mountain lions acting aggressively toward humans over the last decade.

we use the weed eater at work for cutting down tons of small trees. they actually arnt that bad ass. the get dull really fast and they have trouble cutting down a 3 dbh tree. i would rather have my 441 stihl against a bear.

Grizzly Bears are pretty chill just don't fuck with their young, stay away from their food, and don't surprise their asses and they will keep their distance. It's those god damned black bears you gotta keep an eye on.

Regardless a grizzly would fuck up a black bear and fuck you up a lot worse then a black bear. The best thing to do would be play dead, unless the bear is hunting, then dead meat is exactly what he is looking for.

i hope no bears are reading this, they fucking rock at computers. ive seen a grizzly trace an IP in like 4 seconds flat. you better lock your door, not that it would stop a grizzly bear.

The snow plows with blowers in Truckee are absolutely massive compared to this, I think they'd do a better job making sure the bear couldn't just climb over the auger. I can't find a picture or video though, it sucks

ive allways wanted to get buck naked cover my slef in dirt and mud and sticks in my hair. and kill a deer . leave it under a tree and i hide up in the tree. and when a bear come to investigate the deer i jump down with my bowie knife and Kill that mother fucker..

but really i am more scared of a couger in the forest than a bear.. but also in oregon there are more cougers than bears!

Are you simple? I have run into probly 7 or 8 black bears in the woods of colorado and they sighted me then scampered away. Plus black bears are 6 to 7 feet tall grizzlys are like 10-11 feet. I would much rather run into 3 black bears (no cubs) than 1 grizzly any day.
