Help on choosing editing software?

So I am a beginner editor, filming mainly with a miniDV Handycam and occasionally with my point-and-shoot Samsung camera. I just need help on finding a cheap/free editing programme for my Windows XP laptop. Dont really have a budget for this and I have tried WMM but it seems to suck pretty bad...

So basically whats the best software for me? Any responses are appreciated

I have about 19 gigs of space. 1GB Ram. 1.86GHz, Windows XP PRO '02. anything else? thanks

^^ with those specs your not gona be able to get a vary high end editing program. I use FCP on a MacBook and i had to upgrade the RAM and memory (memory was more a personal preference than anything) to get my computer running smoothly. And with your computer i wouldn't suggest bogging it down even more.

thanks. but im not after anything 'high end' . if i could get iMovie i would, but ive heard you can't get it on Windows. basically i want the closest thing i can get to imovie but for windows (not WMM!).

Ya i don't know much about PC's i only had macs so i don't have any experience with PC's

neither of those would run very well on his computer... i suggest adobe premiere elements. but youre gonna have to buy another hard drive if you want to edit 19 gigs isnt gonna cut it
