I don't know if its the same with FT. but i know that a lot of companies have one shell that covers a couple different sizes and it is infact just the linear that is a different size. I even know ppl that buy linears and cut out the toe stiching at the end of it in a T shape to make it a more natural feel within the shell depending on the shell size that they end up getting. The shop also may know if it is the same shell size as the 28 and if so then it will just be the linear that is different and with you having one it won't be a problem.

Most companies use what is called 2:1 sizing. This means that 2 sizes are covered by 1 shell (26.0 and 26.5 are the same shell). In the past, liners used to be half sized but now they are pretty much the same- there is no real point to making a true half-sized liner when everything is heat-moldable now. Once you heat mold a liner, any difference between the half size and whole is gone, and you get a liner that fits your foot and the shell.

There are exceptions to this industry standard, but no company makes a 1:1 sized ski boot. It would literally cost you double. Some companies, however, use a 3:1 sized boot to save money, but the fit is greatly sacrificed.

i hate to be 'that guy', but lange does 1:1 lasting on a few specific sizes. for their womens boots, they do 1:1 for 23.5, 24.0, and 24.5, since those tend to be the most common sizes for women, and for whatever reason, the first year they went to their current shell there was about a 16mm gab between 23.5 and 24.5, hence the room between the two for a true 24.0. they might be doing the same thing this year with the new RS/RX shell and a true 27.0 or 28.0, but i can't say for sure on that one, it's just what i've heard. my shop doesn't have them in stock to verify yet. other than that, pretty much everything you've ever said about boots on here is 100% spot on, so props for sharing worthwhile knowledge!

Ahh yeah, you are right about the Lange CRL. They did introduce another shell size but only because they goofed on the mm measurement between certain shell sizes trying to cut costs. When they realized that it was causing problems, they made a separate 24.0 from 24.5 but only because they made that mistake. I really don't think there is a boot out there that jumps every 5mm with a different shell and liner on every size (standard is 10mm per size). But lemme know if you find one.

Pretty sure the new Langes follow a traditional 2:1 set up. But they don't produce the whole size, just the half, and they last the liner exactly to the shell. The same guy that did the new Lange RS/RX series also did the Rossignol Sensor3 series and he sort of did an interesting tweak with their sizing. He made all of the boots an extra 5mm longer to try to more accurately get the in-between size feet, so they jump 300 to 310 to 320, as opposed to 295 to 305 to 315, etc.

exactly what i did. i even am using a ten year old raichle tongue because its the perfect flex that i like. cool look, rubber footbard, bomber aluminum buckles, you cant lose.
