Why do you choose?

An avid reader of horrible NSG threads, over the summer it seemed like every other day had a huge religion thread. Many side were taken, mostly science, some God, and a couple Joseph smiths. A few held strong arguments as to why they chose not to follow religion and believe in God. Hardly any supported themselves in a feasible manner in favor of religion although they stuck to what they believed in.

The question I ask is why do you believe or not believe? (God)

i honestly don't believe in god because i was raised in a completely unreligious family and never had any reason to. i didn't have to go to church and get brainwashed each sunday. as i got older and more able to make my own decisions and interpretations, my opinion never swayed because i saw no evidence of any form of god. its entirely implausible

I believe in God. I went to church. They tried to "Brainwash" me. But I have to say, now that I'm older and able to understand more of what the priests are saying, a lot of the sermons aren't so much about "ZOMG BELIEVE IN GOD OR YOU GO TO HELL!" as they are about trying to live together as one people regardless of religion. While yes, I do think that the church tends to bend and twist and lie, individual priests and pastors do have some really good insight into today's modern world. I go to a catholic school, and the priest that holds our masses very rarely talks about God at all in his homily. Most of us just sleep through the mass except for his homily because it pertains to most of our lives. But like he says, "I'm gonna be so god damn pissed if God doesn't exist."

Also, I don't see God as this omnipresent, omnipotent being. I just see him/her/it as something/someone that just gives us a push in the right direction from time to time, but leaves it up to us whether we take that road or not.



Also, for all those fundamental christians,

Hell doesn't exist.

See Im the same as you, never went to church, family doesn't go to church etc. But I do believe in God. Im against religion tho. The influence the bible has on our civilization as we know today is pretty strong. Something that has influenced so many people over such a long period of time deserves some sort of credibility.

On one hand,
Its helped multitudes of people live better lives, blah blah blah.

On the other,
It is one of the greatest weapons mankind has ever produced.

i always thought of myself as an agnostic, didn't want to choose, but this year i just settled on atheism. while i admit humans are a pretty big deal as far as life forms go, we're not as big a deal as we think we are. we're fucking smart, but in a chemical sense, we're the same as anything out there. i think we're a pretty damn cool species as far as animals go, but we're still basically animals. animals who are absolutely ridiculous at using tools.

huh, didn't really answer the question there. basically, i chose because i personally believe that my views are right, i guess..

also, interestingly enough, i had a class on pascal's wager today, there's a pretty good reason to choose religion, even if it didn't manage convince me to stop fapping.

I think Atheists who don't believe in religion are idiots.

First off, if you spending as much time NOT believing in god as someone who does. Its a religion.

Second off, i do believe in god. Why? Because of my anatomy background i know that DNA, enzymes, and the other reactions in a cell are too complex to happen by accident, or a puddle of mud, big bang theory, or etc.


INB4 Hate on believing in god, not caring, or evolveling.

1.) Shut the fuck up. Seriously, religions are to blame for everyone wanting to kill each other ever since the first Barbarian threw someone on the slab and cut their heart out. I personally think that anyone who believes a work of fiction to be 100% truth and tell others they are idiots for not believing in wizards, warlocks, and witches are the ones that are idiots.

2.) What the fuck is your second sentence supposed to be saying. I suggest an education before believing in some "GOD"

They got their principles straight, I'll give them that. I will and do live by the principles of treating people right yadayada.

The bible says that getting high and drunk is a sin. I don't see how that's a sin. At all.

I prefer not to think about it too much because its annoying and confusing.

a lot of (not all) atheists spend too much time hating on religion and blaming all the wars and problems of the world on religion. the ultimate irony of that, is that they are doing exactly what they hate so much about religion: alienating people because of their beliefs and wanting to change their opinion because (according to them) its ruining the world. so everybody, on both sides, theist or atheist, chill the fuck out.

as to why i believe in god, well theres absolutely no way to prove or disprove the existence of a higher power. atheists like to make it a god vs. science thing, and i don't think it has to be at all. the further we push our knowledge the closer we get to god imho. i just think theres a unifying intelligence to everything that goes on. even human thought can influence molecular action (watch "what the bleep to we know," its fucking awesome), so everything is connected at some level. i just think the universe has a conscience

Like you're allowed to drink, but not in excess (aka being drunk).

Just wanted to say that to me it's always the other way around. Religious people say something on topic of God and such, you reply: "Sorry, I don't believe in God." Then they proceed to ask you "Why?!"

To me it's always like this, I have to start explaining as if I'm in the wrong. It's hard to be polite when talking to someone so deeply religious in their minds that everything is an act of God. It's like Panda said, if you are not a smug asshole by nature, then you as an atheist simply digress from thinking about anything to do with religion instead of driving your agenda down people's throats.
