Final Cut Pro 7 Vs. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4

i want to get into editing videos, and have access to both. if im going to learn, which program should i use?

Its all personal preference.

Those two programs can pretty much do the same and its more about which one you like better.
I personally prefer FCP a LOT more, but thats just me.
On the flip side there is no comparison with AE and other 2.5d motion graphic programs.

I dont know about Premier, but in AE you can ramp a lot better then in FCP.
In AE you can play around with the bezier curves a lot easier and better then in FCP.

If you dont have FCP 7 (any earlier version), it is extremely confusing and annoying (the slip tool "s").
With FCP 7 you simply just change the speed and then click the little curve up and the little curve down to ramp in and out.

If you go into the control tab, you can play with the curve but its not as good as AE.


I've had alot of success with it, i use it alot.

The real question is: FCP7 Vs. Premiere CS5...

I was a loyal FCP user, but I recently tried using premiere and loved it. It natively plays back my footage from my t2i (no more transcoding for me!) and looks very similar to After Effects, which I am very familiar with. It is also a lot cheaper with a student discount...

but to be honest I disliked premiere when I first got it, I love FCP I have only made 1 edit on it but its tight

you guys obviously havent used CS5.

full native playback on almost every video format you can think of. new rendering engine..scrubbing through AVChd footage was a breeze.

dynamic link between Pr -> Ae -> Ps is the absolute fucking best thing ever. click a file in the timeline and select "send to after effects" Ae opens up, anything you do to it changes in Pr in real time. no exporting or saving or anything.

insane.

happiest i've ever been with an editing program.

Also, you can ramp in premiere since cs3 but without sound. had to use Ae for that but now that Dynamic Link works its not a big deal any more.

Ya have used CS5 before and liked it but i just prefer FCP. Its all about what gets the job done best for you. I know FCP pretty well everything works well for me.

exactly. You can get just about the same thing done with either program. I can't say this with full certainty as I'm not too well versed in fcp7, but premiere does seem to have better features, faster render times, and natively supports more formats. It's p2 workflow is also superior with being able to work with the raw p2 files instead of transcoding them. I also tend to use the garbage mattes in premiere and, perhaps they've upgraded since fcp6, but the fcp garbarge mattes are well, garbage.

However, all that really doesn't matter as neither one is going to limit your creativity and when it comes down to it you can do most anything you want in either program.

On the plus side of fcp I feel as though it's a lot more stable. Maybe it's just me, but I've had a lot of trouble with premiere crashing. So a lot of the time that I may gain in my faster render times and not having to transcode I lose with having to reopen the program and re edit.

I was hoping premiere would run smoother on a mac, but I recently made the switch from windows and I'm running into just about as many problems. I really wish premiere was more stable...

CS5 is much better than FCP7, but once FCP upgrades its going to leapfrog Adobe.

But FCP7 is better than CS4.

Hopefully that's the case. I feel like fcp has been playing catch up for a long time now on adobe. FCP7 was released a while after CS4 and basically took on a lot of the things that CS4 had as an advantage over earlier versions of fcp. Then shortly after that CS5 was released and is pretty damn far ahead of fcp7 in my eyes (minus the instability i've encountered). I see fcp7 and cs4 to be pretty even... again, minus the instability. Adobe needs to figure that shit out.

The new upgrade of FCP is going to have to be really damn impressive in order to fend off whatever adobe has up their sleeves for CS6, whenever that comes out.

I actually opted for CS5 > FCP this year. I know and like Premiere, and the deal I was getting on the production premium was just unreal. So far I have nothing bad to say about it.

Final Cut Pro does not have native editing support for AVCHD footage. So it is a nice choice to transcode AVCHD video to other playable or editable video formats. The program I am using is Aunsoft MTS Converter for Mac which natively support AVCHD conversion and editing.
